Marlington's Dymonte Thomas selected to play in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl
Marlington High School senior Dymonte Thomas has been selected to play in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
The game will be played on Jan. 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The annual East vs. West match-up will be televised live on NBC at 1 p.m. and will feature the nation’s top 90 high school football players.

Hudson standout Ben Gedeon named to U.S. U19 national football team
Hudson senior linebacker Ben Gedeon will be named to the 2013 U.S. Under-19 national team later this afternoon, The Beacon Journal has learned.
Gedeon, who is orally committed to Michigan, is one of six linebackers to be named today by USA Football.

Wooster senior tight end Charles Cairnie has reportedly received an offer from Air Force, according to ScoutingOhio.com. Cairnie is 6 feet 5 and 230 pounds.

St. V-M to play Bellevue at 11 a.m. Saturday for Division III state title
St. Vincent-St. Mary is the final school still playing football in the five-county Akron Beacon Journal coverage area.
St. V-M (12-2) will meet Bellevue (13-1) in the Division III state championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

The Akron Beacon Journal five-county coverage area has four teams still playing in the OHSAA state football tournament.
The four schools are Aurora, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Creston Norwayne and Mogadore.

Falls' Andrew Appleby signs to swim at Ohio State
Andrew Appleby will be trading in black and gold for scarlet and gray after this school year.
Appleby, a Cuyahoga Falls High School senior, signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to continue his academic and swimming careers at Ohio State University.

Phil Heyn resigns as Revere football coach
Phil Heyn, 35, recently gave Revere Athletic Director Bill Schumacher a letter of resignation as football coach.
Heyn, who previously served as Revere’s baseball coach, guided the Minutemen’s football team for the past three seasons and compiled a 4-26 record. He was an assistant coach the previous nine seasons.

Lake seniors Jake McBride and McKenna Stephens signed national letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers.
McBride is set to play golf at North Carolina State.

Triway's Tessa Brooks nabs honor
Triway senior volleyball standout Tessa Brooks was chosen as one of 12 national finalists for the 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which honors exceptional students who bring excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
Brooks is one of the 45,000 students who applied for this year’s award. She is one of the 12 national finalists who will travel to New York City where two national winners — one male, one female — will be chosen. Each will receive a crystal Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy, $10,000 donation to their respective high schools and recognition during the collegiate Heisman ceremony in New York City on Dec. 8, airing on ESPN.

Northwest Akron Youth Basketball League seeking players
The Northwest Akron Youth Basketball League is accepting registrations for youth basketball leagues.
Boys and girls are welcome between the ages of 8-13. Co-directors Harry Movsesian and Mike Kormushoff said the final registration date is Thursday (Nov. 8) at the Northwest Family Recreation Center on Shatto Rd. from 6-8 p.m. This year’s fee is $55 per player.

Massillon's Conley is area's top-rated player
Massillon senior cornerback Gareon Conley is the area’s highest rated football player in the 2013 class, according to the ESPN 300 national list.
Conley, who is 6 feet 1 and 165 pounds, is ranked No. 62 nationally. He is verbally committed to Michigan.

Akron men's soccer earns No. 1 national ranking
The University of Akron men’s soccer team is No. 1 in the country just in time for the postseason.
Zips coach Caleb Porter found out Tuesday that his players have earned the No. 1 ranking in the national coaches poll. Maryland, North Carolina, Georgetown and UCLA are ranked second through fifth.

Kissner, Sturm step down as Walsh coaches
Walsh Jesuit Athletic Director Grant Conzaman announced Tuesday that veteran coaches John Kissner and Missy Sturm have decided to step down.
Kissner started the Walsh boys soccer program 35 years ago and has served as its only head coach since 1978.
