Division II softball - Poland Seminary 12, Tallmadge 2
AKRON - A first inning error by Tallmadge opened the door and Poland Seminary ran through it as the Bulldogs defeated Tallmadge 12-2 in a five inning mercy rule game Wednesday night at Firestone Stadium.
A two-out error in the first inning allowed the Bulldogs to go up 2-0 and Megan Hirschbeck's RBI single in the second to left scored Kalie Benson to make it 3-0.
The flood gates opened in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back errors by Blue Devils pitcher Brittany Lightel allowed two more runs to score and coupled with a wild pitch and infield single to short by Nicole White drove in the fourth run of the inning for a 7-0 lead.
Tallmadge rallied for two runs in the top fourth on a RBI double by Lightel, who went to third on an error by the left fielder and scored on a passed ball, but that was a close as they could get it.
Poland Seminary moves on to the Division II regional final noon Saturday against the winner of Fairless and Mentor Lake Catholic at Firestone Stadium.
The Blue Devils season ends at 21-7, while the Bulldogs improve to 28-1.
