Dunbar, Sandberg, Ong, Pennington among area Division I boys tennis state qualifiers

State boys tennis scouting box

When: Friday and Saturday.

Where: If the weather is nice – at Ohio State University Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts in Columbus. The rain facility is Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City.

Schedule: Play begins both days at 9 a.m. with Division I singles players. Matches between Division II singles players will follow, and then double teams in both divisions will square off.

Area Division I state qualifiers

Singles: Jacob Dunbar, Cloverleaf, Sr.; Aaron Sandberg, Walsh Jesuit, Jr.; Joey Thomas, Jackson, Fr.; Steven Boslet, Hudson, Sr.

Doubles: Copley’s Andrew Ong, Jr. and Jarad Pennington, Sr.; Copley’s Austin Aten, Sr. and Gavin Aten, Fr.; North Canton Hoover’s Rob DeMarco, Sr. and Mike O’Connor, Sr.

Coaches: Mike McGee, Cloverleaf; Mark Ullman, Copley, Tim Morgan, Hudson; Lee Fortner, Jackson; Ryan Shaffer, North Canton Hoover; Rocco Cona, Walsh.

Area Division II state qualifiers

None.

Notes: Dunbar defeated Sandberg this past Saturday in the district singles title match at Oberlin College. The victory was Dunbar’s 32ndof the season to go against no losses. Dunbar plans to graduate from Cloverleaf High School early so he can enroll for fall classes at the University of Richmond. He is set to play tennis for the Spiders alongside his brother, Ethan Dunbar, who also graduated from Cloverleaf. Ong and Pennington were equally as impressive by securing a district doubles title Saturday at Oberlin.
