Dunk 4 Diabetes High School Shootout

What: The second annual Dunk 4 Diabetes High School Shootout features 13 boys basketball games.

When and Where: A collection of 24 teams are in the event, which is Saturday and Sunday at Walsh University.

Area teams: Firestone, Brunswick, Barberton and North Canton Hoover are scheduled to play.

Saturday: Cleveland Central Catholic vs. Cleveland John Hay, 11 a.m.; Richmond Heights vs. Gateway, Pa., 12:30 p.m.; Firestone vs. Brunswick, 2:30 p.m.; Barberton vs. Beachwood, 4:30 p.m.; Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph vs. Martinsburg, (W.Va.), 6 p.m.; Lakewood St. Edward vs. Rochester Bishop Kearney (N.Y.), 7:30 p.m.; Mentor vs. Huntington Prep (W.Va.), 9 p.m.

Sunday: Leavittsburg LaBrae vs. Malvern, 11:45 a.m.; Garfield Heights vs. Gahanna Lincoln, 1:30 p.m.; Cleveland St. Ignatius vs. St. Clairsville, 3:15 p.m.; Cleveland Benedictine vs. Huntington Prep (W.Va.), 5 p.m.; North Canton Hoover vs. Rochester Bishop Kearney (N.Y.), 6:45 p.m.; Shaker Heights vs. Pickerington Central, 8:30 p.m. SportsTime Ohio will televise Sunday's final four games live.

Notes: A majority of the schools are from Ohio. Nationally-ranked Huntington Prep (W.Va.) is also part of the showcase and features the consensus top ranked player in the country, senior forward Andrew Wiggins. He is considering scholarship offers from Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina a host of other schools. . . . Firestone is led by seniors Jerome Lane and Kevin Gladney, who are football recruits committed to Akron and Nebraska, respectively. Brunswick features Kyle Wheeler and Zach Parker. Barberton is led by sophomore Joshua Williams, and North Canton Hoover boasts seniors Harrison Blackledge and Dom Iero, a University of Akron baseball recruit.

Tickets: All tickets are general admission and permit re-entry with a stub or hand stamp. Tickets are available at all participating schools at $10 for adults and $8 for students. At the gate, tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets can be ordered online at dunk4diabetes.com for $10.

Background: Event director Chas Wolfe said the series of games "is a collaboration between health/sport awareness powered by the American Diabetes Association and Dunk 4 Diabetes Shootout (D4D) that empowers high school boys basketball players, there coaches, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against diabetes. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball players nationwide to increase diabetes awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fund-raising activities, and advocacy programs." Wolfe is a grandson and son of a diabetic.
