The Ellet boys basketball team has equaled its win total from last season courtesy of a 5-0 start to this season.
Ellet can surpass the total tonight when it meets Buchtel (1-0, 1-0) in a City Series game scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
“We have so many kids right now that are pretty good players,” Ellet fourth-year coach Mark Fisher said. “Five of our guys are averaging double figures and nobody is over 15 points per game.”
The Ellet starting lineup consists of three seniors and two juniors. Jake Fisher (5-foot-10 point guard), Jake Williams (6-4 forward) and Dionte Williams (6-0 guard) are the seniors. Breaon Brady is a junior center at 6-foot-7 and 285-pounds and classmate Jae’Vante Ray is a 5-10 forward.
“Dionte can really score when we need it,” Mark Fisher said. “All these guys can score. Jake [Fisher] is a true point guard and is averaging around six assists per game and he can rebound. Jake Williams is averaging around nine rebounds per game. Breaon is solid and so is Jae’Vante.”
The top Orangemen reserves 5-11 junior guard Maurice Mackey, 6-8 freshman forward A.J. Gareri, 6-2 junior forward Julian Furman, 6-1 junior guard Karlton Cherry, 5-7 junior guard Cle’Von Burch and 6-1 senior guard Marcellius Logan.
“We have not recently played with this type of height,” Mark Fisher said. “We have been stressing pounding the ball inside. We haven’t had to shoot too much from the outside. We have guys who can shoot the 3. We want to play inside-out in our half-court sets.”
The success is welcomed following seasons of six, four and five wins.
“We spent a lot of time this summer playing,” Mark Fisher said. “We went to some of the shootouts and stuff like that and played well. We played in a mega scrimmage in Columbus and played well. Our guys have gotten know to each other and improve. We force 25 turnovers a game with our kids hustling around the court.
“Another key is we have great senior leadership from Jake [Fisher], who is the quarterback and the point guard, Jake Williams and Dionte Williams.”
Ellet’s five wins are over Copley (83-63), Tallmadge (66-58), Springfield (60-25), Barberton (77-37) and Kent Roosevelt (75-49).
Buchtel opened its season with a 94-59 win over visiting Garfield on Friday. The Griffins placed six players in double figures – senior Ci’Andre Johnson-Lollar, junior Talen Sims, junior LaShawn Johnson, senior Tre’ Smith, sophomore Tyrice Pace and junior Deric Rucker. Coach Stephen White said the six players combined to score 72 points.
