Parade Magazine names St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Dante Booker Jr. to All-American Football Team

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior linebacker Dante Booker Jr. has been named to the Parade Magazine All-American Football Team.

Booker, an Ohio State University recruit, will be recognized in the Feb. 2 issue of Parade Magazine. He was selected as the Akron Beacon Journal's Player of Year in November, Ohio's Mr. Football in December and played in the U.S. Army All-American Game in January.

Akron native Darius Carter helps Wichita State to 20-0 record, top 5 national ranking

Akron native Darius Carter has helped the nationally ranked Wichita State University men’s basketball team to a 20-0 record for the first time in program history.

Wichita State is ranked No. 4 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 5 in the Associated Press poll following its 70-55 win over host Illinois State on Wednesday.

Basketball teams ready to compete in Dunk4Diabetes Shootout at Walsh U

The 3rdannual Dunk4Diabetes Shootout will be at Walsh University in North Canton on Saturday and Sunday.

Event director Chas Wolfe said 21 basketball teams are scheduled to compete during the two days.

Wadsworth, Austintown Fitch set to host wrestling tournaments

The 28th annual Grizzly Invitational Wrestling Tournament is set for Saturday at Wadsworth High School and the Josh Hephner Memorial Wrestling Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Austintown Fitch.

Area schools Buckeye, GlenOak, Field, North Canton Hoover and Wadsworth are among 16 teams scheduled to compete at Wadsworth.

Barberton names Tony Gotto football coach

Barberton High School announced Thursday it has hired Tony Gotto to be its head football coach.

“Tony is a graduate of Barberton High School and Walsh University with 15 years of experience as a teacher and coach in the Akron Public Schools and Tallmadge City Schools,” Barberton Athletic Director Rob Culbertson said. “He is committed to developing a winning and sustainable program in which all members of the community can be proud to support.”

Scott will be enshrined in the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame at a banquet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Hilton at Easton in Columbus.

Brecksville has won the Bill Dies team title at Firestone in each of the past five years.

The 28th annual Top Gun Wrestling Tournament at Alliance is scheduled to have 43 teams competing this weekend.

Claymont returns to Alliance to try and defend its title. Perry will also be at Alliance in a venue it has placed second at four years in a row.

11th annual Classic in the Country includes area girls basketball teams

The 11th annual Classic in the Country girls basketball event is set for this weekend at Berlin Hiland High School.

There are 20 games scheduled between Saturday, Sunday and Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Davis also has offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Indiana, Kent State, Louisville, Marshall, Minnesota, Toledo and Western Michigan, says Scout.com

Minerva senior offensive lineman Mason Butler has committed to play football at Tiffin, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

Butler, who is 6 feet 3 and 285 pounds, also had an offer from Notre Dame College.

72nd annual Touchdown Club Fall Sports Banquet set for Jan. 13

The 72nd annual Touchdown Club Fall Sports Banquet is set for Jan. 13 at Guys Party Centre, 500 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron, OH 44319.

Suburban League seeks one school to join revamped league

The Suburban League, currently an eight-school league but expanding in 2015-2016, is seeking to add one school.

Current member Cloverleaf announced in 2013 it is leaving to join the Portage Trail Conference thus creating a need for one more school to complete the 16 team, two-conference league.

Lough, a 2004 Green graduate, currently is a member of the Baltimore Orioles after playing with the Kansas City Royals in each of the past two seasons.

Firestone High School makes plans to celebrate 50th anniversary of its pool

Firestone High School is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its pool this school year.

The pool at Firestone opened in October 1963, a gift to the community from the Firestone brothers – Leonard Firestone, Harvey Firestone, Roger Firestone and Raymond Firestone. The brothers were in attendance at the 1963 Firestone Natatorium dedication.

St. V-M senior Dante Booker Jr. set to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior linebacker Dante Booker Jr. is scheduled to play on national television on Saturday.

Booker, Ohio’s Mr. Football, will suit up for the U.S. Army All-American Game on Saturday in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The football game will kickoff at 1 p.m. kickoff and be televised live on NBC.

Hoban, Massillon stars earn Freshman All-American honors for football

Two area athletes – Todd Sibley of Archbishop Hoban and Danny Clark of Massillon –were named to the MaxPreps.com 2013 Football Freshmen All-American Teams.

Sibley, who is 5-foot-10 and 180-pounds, helped Hoban finish with a 5-5 record this past season. He rushed 189 times for 1,201 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 10 receptions for 201 yards and one touchdown.
