Cloverleaf set to leave SL, join PTC in 2015-2016

Cloverleaf High School will leave the leave Suburban League and join Portage Trail Conference for athletics in the 2015-2016 school year, says Suburban league Commissioner Keith Walker.

Walker said the Suburban League is seeking to add one school to the expanded conference, which is set to have 16 total schools divided into two, eight-school divisions in 2015-2016.

Larry Nance earns MWC Player of the Week honor

Wyoming junior forward Larry Nance, a 2011 Revere High School graduate, has been named the Mountain West Conference player of the week.

It is Nance’s first player of the week honor of his collegiate career.

Akron native Darius Carter helps Wichita State to 10-0 record, national ranking

Akron native Darius Carter is a contributing player on the Wichita State University men’s basketball team that is 10-0 for the first time in program history and nationally ranked.

Wichita State is ranked No. 9 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 11 in the Associated Press poll following a 70-61 win over visiting Tennessee on Saturday.

Walsh Jesuit senior Aaron Sandberg commits to Brown University for tennis

Walsh Jesuit senior Aaron Sandberg has made a commitment to play tennis at Brown University.

Sandberg finished as a state finalist in the Division I singles tournament as a junior in 2013. He placed third in singles at the state tournament his sophomore year and was a state doubles qualifier his freshman year.

Firestone boys basketball team features dynamic trio of players

The Firestone boys basketball team is 3-1 with victories over Copley (65-49), Archbishop Hoban (63-57) and East (72-62). The Falcons have an effective trio with 6-3 senior Evan Kennerly, 6-5 sophomore Raybon Lewis and 5-11 senior JaeQuan Jones.

Kennerly is averaging 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Lewis has set a career high in points and rebounds in each of his past three games, and is averaging 12.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Jones is averaging 8.0 points and 5.0 assists.

Ellet boys basketball looks to continue fast start Tuesday against Buchtel

The Ellet boys basketball team has equaled its win total from last season courtesy of a 5-0 start to this season.

Ellet can surpass the total tonight when it meets Buchtel (1-0, 1-0) in a City Series game scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.

The Fighting Irish feature five seniors with extensive varsity experience in Jordan Korinek, Shannon Jack, Alexis Taylor, Cassie Jakubick and Kiley May.

King, Booker miss St. V-M boys basketball games due to injuries

St. Vincent-St. Mary sophomore basketball player V.J. King injured his left wrist this past Tuesday during a practice.

King played briefly in the first half Friday of St. V-M’s 72-59 loss to host Lakewood St. Edward on and then sat out Saturday’s 53-52 loss to visiting Cleveland Central Catholic. St. V-M is 1-2 this season.

Massillon freshman quarterback Danny Clark commits to Ohio State

Massillon freshman quarterback Danny Clark has committed to play football for Ohio State University.

Clark can sign a national letter of intent to attend OSU on a scholarship when he is a senior in February of 2017.

OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights

COLUMBUS The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors met Thursday for its regularly scheduled December meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted later at OHSAA.org.

-          The board reviewed the fall sports tournaments, as well as the inaugural Middle School Cross Country Invitational. Final attendance figures and financial reports will be released in January and February.

Lowell Klinefelter retires as CCC head football coach after 41 seasons

Lowell Klinefelter has announced he is retiring from coaching after leading the Canton Central Catholic football team for 41 seasons.

Klinefelter, who will be 70 in April, is also currently the Athletic Director and is in his 48th year teaching at CCC. He was a member of the Crusaders coaching staff the seven seasons prior to being the head coach.

OHSAA statement regarding petition deadline

This is an OHSAA statement regarding the petition deadline:

“The deadline for member schools to submit petitions for 2014 referendum items was Monday, December 2, which the schools would then vote on in May. There were no petitions submitted. The OHSAA had anticipated that a petition might be submitted regarding separation of team sport tournaments into public and private divisions. However, no petition was submitted. The OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Committee, which has created proposals the last three years that the membership voted down,  will continue to meet and, along with the Board of Directors, will continue to evaluate this situation. There is no definite timeframe for another competitive balance proposal or other details available at this time.”

Akron youth Martavien Johnson set to play in Offense-Defense Bowl Game

Akron resident Martavien Johnson, 10, has been invited to participate in the eighth annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week festivities taking place at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL. in early January.

Johnson will travel with family and friends and be in Orlando from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5.
