Firestone's Mark Belanger signs to swim at Ohio State
Firestone High School senior Mark Belanger has signed with Ohio State University to continue his academic and swimming careers on scholarship.
“I’m excited to swim in college,” Belanger said. “I’m looking forward to swimming faster and I’m excited that I get to keep doing the sport I love.”
Belanger, 18, said that he also strongly the Naval Academy before making his decision on OSU.
“I am excited for Mark,” Firestone swim coach Cindy Virdo said. “He is just starting to come into his own. He will bloom in college. I’m looking forward to seeing him continue to progress in high school and then in college. He is a great student and a great kid.
Belanger has a 4.2 cumulative grade point average and takes International Baccalaureate classes at Firestone. He finished second at the Division I state meet last season in the 100-yard freestyle at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton and also placed sixth in the 100 backstroke.
Belanger said he posted his personal best times in each event Saturday in the Speedo USA Junior Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn. He clocked a 45.5 seconds in the 100 freestyle and a 51.2 seconds in the 100 backstroke.
