Week Three: Buchtel (1-1) @ St. Vincent-St. Mary (1-1)
7 p.m. Friday at John Cistone Field
Storyline: Buchtel coach Ricky Powers certainly isn’t scheduling powder puffs this season. The Griffins want to win against quality opponents.
It worked out in a week one, 29-13 stunner at Massillon. Week two against Pittsburgh Central Catholic? Not so much in a 35-6 loss to the storied Pittsburgh program.
How will they fare against neighboring rival St. Vincent-St. Mary?
The Griffins are loaded with freakish athleticism. Quarterback Tyler Jones is a speedy haul in the running game and playmakers are all over the place on both sides of the ball.
But, in order to be successful they will have to minimize their mistakes. Although they were able to beat Massillon, the Griffins still threw three interceptions and lost a fumble. Massillon turned it over seven times. Last week, Buchtel threw at least two interceptions and had two punts blocked.
It’s hard to figure out what to make out of St. Vincent-St. Mary so far this season. They rolled over struggling Akron North 48-0, who is dealing with a lot of issues this season.
And St. V-M lost 20-7 to a strong Columbus Bishop Watterson program in week one. In the loss they turned the ball over seven times.
Senior Doran Grant rushed for three touchdowns and 59 yards last week and caught a touchdown pass in week one.
Whoever can minimize the mistakes Friday should be able to take their record to 2-1.
