FOR BUCHTEL, WINNING THE HARDHAT IS THE GOAL
It seems that every year for the last several years, Buchtel travels down to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium to face the Massillon Tigers. This year is no exception as the Griffins open the season Thursday against Massillon.
But also this year, the teams will have something significant to play for. Buchtel head coach Ricky Powers said his offensive line coach, Chris Sliegh, came up with a novel idea.
``Coach Sliegh thought that since the schools have been playing each other for so long and since we both come from hard-working, middle-class cities, he thought it would be nice to play for a (ceremonial) hardhat,'' Powers said. ``(Massillon coach) Jason (Hall) loved the idea I do too. The hardhat represents what both cities are all about- hard work.''
Meanwhile, Powers said he has been pleased with the way junior quarterback Steve Parker has been running the offense.
``He's looking good,'' Powers said. ``I like the way he's throwing the ball and running with it when he needs to.''
