Garfield coach Bob Sax not surprised by success of Whitney Mercilus at Illinois
Garfield football coach Bob Sax went to see Illinois defensive lineman Whitney Mercilus play Michigan a few weeks ago and was able to spend some time with the former Garfield standout.
Mercilus, a junior, is one of the nation’s top college football players this season. He was named Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalist earlier this month and led the nation in sacks (13.5), sacks per game (1.23) and forced fumbles (8).

Walsh Baseball Players Will Play at Next Level
Two members of the Walsh Jesuit baseball team have found homes at colleges and will continue their academic and athletic careers at the next level after graduation.
Drew Miletti, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound second baseman, will attend Ohio Wesleyan University, a Division III program. Miletti was instrumental in leading the team to a 20-3 season in 2011 and the school’s seventh national ranking in the past eight years.

Orrville's Mason Monheim to visit Toledo
Orrville senior linebacker/running back Mason Monheim will be visiting Toledo this week, according to Orrville coach Doug Davault.
Monheim, an all-Beacon Journal first-team selection this season, had 108 tackles and 11 tackles for loss for Orrville, which reached the Division IV state playoffs.

Medina football coach steps down after one season
Ray Hradek has reportedly stepped down after one season as Medina football coach, according to Cleveland.com.
Hradek teaches at Midpark and coached at Medina, according to the report. “I didn’t realize it would be so tough teaching at one school and coaching at another,” Hradek told the website.

Hoops Preview at Buchtel High School
For those ready to greet the high school basketball season, the Buchtel Griffins will host a preview of teams from Northeast Ohio at the school on 1040 Copley St.
The Richmond Heights Spartans will face off against Cleveland Collinwood at 6 p.m. followed by the Griffins vs. Cleveland East Tech at 7 p.m.

After tough start, Tallmadge football coach happy with season
Tallmadge football coach Joe Vassalotti will look on the 2011 season as one that saw his team overcome an 0-2 start and win a league championship outright before making it to Week 12.
Tallmadge (9-3) lost to Aurora 34-14 in the Division II regional semifinals Nov. 11 at Solon. But, Vassalotti said Tallmadge gave a strong effort. Aurora defeated Walsh Jesuit 21-4 in the regional final to advance to the state semifinals.

Orrville football coach proud of season
Orrville football coach Doug Davault said he was proud of the season Orrville had especially overcoming injuries during the season and making it to Week 12.
While the team was disappointed with the 34-19 loss to Norwayne Nov. 21 in the Division IV regional semifinals, he said he likes the potential in the future.

Kent State reportedly offers Springboro guard
Springboro junior guard Sean Welsh has reportedly been offered by Kent State, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Welsh, who is 6 feet 3 and 280 pounds, also has offers from Bowling Green, Ohio and Toledo, according to the website.
Springboro plays in the Greater Western Ohio Conference near Dayton. It is a Division I program.
Akron offers Cleveland QB
The University of Akron has reportedly offered a scholarship to Cleveland Heights senior quarterback Bryce Jones, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Jones, who is 5 feet 11 and 160 pounds, also has an offer from Air Force.

Charity Hoops Event Set for Norton
On Friday November 18th The Barberton Lady Magics and Norton Lady Panthers will play a preview basketball games to benefit the Stewart’s Caring Place in Fairlawn in memory of Kelly Braman Keith and the Nicole (Webel) Bodjanc Scholarship Fund, Nov. 18 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Stewart’s Caring Place offers counseling and support groups for individuals and families battling cancer; which Kelly was a huge advocate and inspired others fighting this disease.

Highland Golfer to Play for Ohio University
Highland senior Lauren McKinzie signed a letter of intent on November 9 to attend and play golf for Ohio University next year. She has received a partial athletic scholarship from the university.
Lauren is a four-year, first team All-Suburban League golfer, as well as a three-year, first team All-Northeast Ohio selection. She finished her senior season in an impressive fashion, posting a 75 at the OHSSA Sectional Tournament and a 77 in the 2nd Round of the OHSSA State Tournament.

Fighting Irish Hire Softball Coach
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School announced that the school has hired Kortney Spidell-Harmon as their new softball coach. “We are pleased to welcome Kortney to our athletic program.
"She is a qualified and energetic coach that our student-athletes should really enjoy playing for,” said athletic director Andy Jalwan.

Tallmadge's Linder to Commit to Kent State
Tucker Linder, a right handed pitcher and corner infielder, will sign to attend Kent State University and play baseball for Head Coach Scott Stricklin and the Golden Flashes. Linder had offers from Arizona, Kentucky,Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Ohio. Following a 7-1 junior campaign on the mound for the Division II District Champion Blue Devils that included a 0.95 ERA and 70 strikeouts, Linder was named 2nd Team All-Ohio.
In his career the right hander boasts a 17-5 record, 159 strikeouts, two no hitters and a 1.79 ERA while opponents are batting just .189 against the 6-foot-5, 215 lb. starting pitcher.
