GlenOak-Mayfield recap

By jlloyd Published: May 27, 2010

What happened

GlenOak lost to Mayfield 3-2 when the Eagles left the bases loaded in the third and had runners at second and third in the sixth but could only score once. Starter T.J. Sutton (6-1) used fastballs in offspeed counts and breaking balls in fastball counts to keep a powerful Mayfield lineup off balance. It worked until the third time through the order, when the middle of Mayfield's order got to Sutton for a pair of runs. GlenOak's season ends at 20-10.

Turning point

The sixth inning, when GlenOak's Brandon White was caught between third and home on a pitchout while attempting a suicide squeeze. The Eagles wound up with just one run in the inning and Mayfield rallied for two in the bottom of the sixth.

 Coach quotes

GlenOak's Greg McClellan: "You get into this kind of game and one hit can make all the difference. We'd been getting those hits all year and today we didn't."

Player quotes

Starting pitcher T.J. Sutton: "It's the best (lineup) I've seen. We've faced a lot of different styles of teams. Hitting-wise, they can do it all. They get one guy on and I had to throw over five or six times in one at-bat. That's just how much they can intimidate you at the plate. Top to bottom, it's the best lineup we've seen and they showed it. You can't take that away from them."

"I think out of 190-plus schools in Ohio, for us to be in that Sweet 16 spot an deservedly so. we did nice job representing Stark County and the Federal League. I'm extremely proud."
