Division I state swimming: Area well represented on the podium’s top spot

CANTON: Two girls and three boys from the Akron area waltzed out of C.T. Branin Natatorium with a Division I state championship Saturday.

Firestone senior Katie Miller set a state record and pool record in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 1:57.98, shattering her own record time of 1:58.12 from Friday’s preliminary meet.

Nordonia’s Stephen Romanik wins Division I state boys diving title

CANTON: Nordonia junior Stephen Romanik won the Division I state boys 1-meter diving championship Saturday with 557.15 points at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Romanik’s score is the second highest score in the history of the state meet. Romanik won sectional and district titles at the University of Akron and Cleveland State University, respectively, leading into the state meet during the previous two weeks.

Miller & Kinney set records in Division I state swim preliminaries

CANTON: Firestone senior Katie Miller and Jackson senior Chase Kinney both had record-setting days in the Division I girls state preliminaries Friday, putting them in prime spots for winning a state title Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Miller set an overall state and pool record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.12.

Twinsburg continues streaks, aims for third Division I state girls basketball title

The Twinsburg girls basketball team still has their mind-boggling streaks intact.

Twinsburg moved its record to 23-0 this season following a 79-28 victory over Youngstown East in a Division I sectional semifinal game at Ellet on Saturday.

Wadsworth's Rachel Goddard commits to Miami (OH) for basketball

Wadsworth senior Rachel Goddard has committed to continue her academic and basketball careers at Miami University in Oxford, OH.

Goddard, a 5-foot-7 point guard, is a leader for the Grizzlies as a second-year starter. She has been an All-Suburban League first-team selection in each of the past two seasons and was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio choice last season.

Wieland twins of Green pick Walsh University

Green senior twins Seth Wieland and Zachary Wieland are going to college together.

The Wieland brothers have committed to Walsh University to continue their academic and athletic careers. They plan to play football and compete in track and field for the Cavaliers after completing their Bulldogs careers.

Copley soccer duo select colleges

Copley seniors Brandon Gathagan and Cory Schepp have signed to continue their academic and soccer careers in college.

Gathagan is headed to Walsh University and Schepp is committed to Malone University. Both were key players for the Indians this past season.

Firestone's Jerome Lane impresses with double-doubles

Senior Jerome Lane averaged a double-double to help Firestone defeat Buchtel three times this season and win the City Series regular season and playoff titles in boys basketball.

Lane, who is 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, averaged 26.0 points and 15.3 rebounds in the three wins, which were by a combined 10 points.

Revere names Gina Hartranft softball coach

Revere has named Gina Hartranft as its softball coach after she previously served as an assistant last season.

Hartranft was the Brunswick Rotary Club MVP and Athlete of the Year in 1990. She was also selected for the All-Pioneer Conference and All-Medina County all-star teams for four years in softball and basketball.

North Canton Hoover seeks swim relay records

North Canton Hoover has two relays entered in the Division I state boys swim meet with top times amongst a field of 24 entries in each event.

Both relays set meet record times last week at Cleveland State University’s Busbey Natatorium, but Vikings coach Matthew Johnsen said the marks just missed school-record times.

Walsh Jesuit coach Pat Ritchie earns honor

Walsh Jesuit High School coach Pat Ritchie has been inducted into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.

Ritchie completed his 33rdseason as Walsh’s boys cross country coach this past year and is entering his 34thseason with the Warriors boys track and field team in the spring (15 as coach and 19 as an assistant).

North Canton Hoover skates to hockey league title

The North Canton Hoover hockey team won the Baron Cup III championship this season with a 4-3 overtime win against Mayfield on Sunday in Brooklyn.

This is the first time Hoover (25-7) has won the title in Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League and the first time the school has reached the title game.

STVM junior Parris Campbell Jr. commits to Ohio State for football

St. Vincent-St. Mary junior Parris Campbell Jr. has committed to continue his academic and athletic careers at Ohio State University on a football scholarship.

Campbell helped St. V-M win the Division II state championship in football in 2012. He also is a two-time state champion in track and field sprint events.

Waldeck chose Michigan because of its proximity to her family home in Illinois and its academic reputation.

Western Reserve Academy senior Eli Dawson signed a commitment to attend the Naval Academy Prep School for one year before enrolling at the United States Naval Academy in the fall of 2014 to play football.

Dawson, a Columbus native, is a wide receiver and linebacker for the Pioneers.

Yu is now a finalist for the national award, which will be announced in May.

Revere picks Michael Murphey to coach football team

Revere will hire Michael Murphey as its new football coach, Superintendent Randy Boroff and Athletic Director Bill Schumacher announced.

Murphey is set to leave Case Western Reserve University to take over as Revere’s football coach. He was CWRU’s offensive line coach and a guidance counselor at Kenston.

Uecker, a 6-foot-5 and 205-pound quarterback, helped the Fighting Irish win the Division II state championship.

The Akron City Series had three football players sign national letter of intent’s to play for a Division I school on Wednesday: Firestone seniors Kevin Gladney and Jerome Lane, and Kenmore senior Deon’tae Moore.

Gladney is headed to the University of Nebraska. Lane and Moore pledged to the University of Akron.

Jackson raises funds for breast cancer

Jackson Rotary, the JHS Interact Club (the high school version of Rotary) and the Polar Bear Hockey Club will again join forces to raise funds for breast cancer.

The team will, for the second year, wear pink jerseys during their game against the Fremont Hockey Club on Feb. 9. Only 500 tickets will be sold for the event to be held at Center Ice Complex.
