Medina triumphs in baseball, track and field
Medina High School experienced some exciting triumphs this past week with the baseball team securing an improbable victory and the boys and girls track and field teams notching two wins.
The baseball team overcame a 10-run deficit to defeat Solon 11-10 on Friday in a Division I district final at the Ballpark at Hudson.
The boys and girls track and field teams each won Division I district championships at Amherst Steele.
Alex Thielman hit a sacrifice fly to score Mike Faschian to cap a nine-run bottom of the seventh inning for the Bees baseball team.
Medina (18-7) will play Willoughby South (20-4) in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. today at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton.
Solon (11-13) led Medina 10-0 after scoring five runs each in the first and sixth innings.
The Bees scored twice in the sixth inning and then nine times in the seventh.
Nick Martinez, Kyle Hulthen, Rutger Luebke, David Schwehm, Will Hiteshue, Dan Sokolowski, Matt Ellenbest and Scott Sency also contributed during the comeback.
Ellenbest pitched 61/3 innings of relief to get the win.
David Knack won the 3,200-meter run for Medina's boys track and field team. Knack also took part in the victorious 3,200 relay that included Robert Robinson, Ian McKee and Tommy Menyes.
Medina's Sam Chester, Jason Suggs, Malik Tuck and Walter Bailey combined to win the 400 relay.
Taylor Burke (high jump), Alex Wasik (pole vault) and Anna Boyert (800) won individual titles for the Medina girls track and field team. The 3,200-relay team of Taylor Wickey, Alexis Smith, Maria Scavuzzo and Boyert also won.
