Nordonia football coach Jeffrey Fox confirmed that rising senior Denzel Ward gave a commitment to play football on scholarship at Ohio State University on Thursday.
“Denzel committed today,” Fox said. “They have been recruiting him since the spring and have been keeping in touch. He went down there [to Columbus] for a one day camp and had a very good performance.
“He was considering a couple of other schools, but he was very excited and he committed on the spot when they offered him a scholarship. This is very exiting news for Denzel.”
Fox said Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer and defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs like Ward’s “cover skills and speed” as a cornerback.
“He is such a great kid,” Fox said. “He deserves this opportunity. He comes from a great family with a very nice mom and dad.”
Ward is a defensive back and wide receiver at Nordonia. He has helped the Knights reach the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. He also is a multiple state qualifier in track and field as a member of the Knights 400 relay and as a long jumper.
Fox said Ward also had scholarship offers from several schools, including Cincinnati, Washington State, Rutgers, Indiana, Kentucky and Syracuse.
