Scott Callaghan has resigned as boys basketball coach at Copley High School after one season.

Callaghan coached Copley to a 12-10 record in 2008-09 but remained a teacher at Wadsworth, which is also a member of the Suburban League.

SVSM senior Harrison commits

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior forward Daylen Harrison has reportedly signed a letter of intent with Wyoming, according to a report from the Plain Dealer.

Harrison helped lead the Irish to the Division II state title this past season.

Akron natives Tyrell Sutton and Bryan Williams, friends since they were children, each signed three-year undrafted contracts with NFL franchises following the conclusion of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Local soccer stars play for Zips vs. Crew

On a sunny day at Lee Jackson Field a pair of former teammates became a foe.

The Columbus Crew defeated the host University of Akron men’s soccer team 1-0 in an exhibition match Sunday played with temperatures in the 80’s before a crowd of 1,563.

Ohio State's spring game is Saturday

North Canton junior RB Erick Howard and Louisville junior WR Bobby Swigert are among the area football standouts that could attend Ohio State's spring football game on Saturday in Columbus, according to Bucknuts.com.

The Web site reports several top college prospects could be in attendance for the annual game at Ohio Stadium.

Ontko taking unofficial visits

Walsh Jesuit junior RB-DB Cameron Ontko (6-0, 215) recently took unofficial visits to Akron, Indiana and Buffalo, according to Walsh coach Gerry Rardin.

Ontko doesn't have any offers yet, but there has been interest from the Big 10 and the MAC. He's also taken visits to Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Garfield junior RB Tyson Gulley (5-9, 175) has offers from Kansas and several Mid-American Conference schools and now it seems the Big Ten is starting to express more serious interest.

"Indiana came in today and they are leaning towards offering him," Garfield coach Bob Sax wrote in an e-mail this afternoon. "I think they will (offer) by the end of May."

State softball poll

Hoban is No. 2 in the Division II state softball poll this week. It is the season's second weekly poll. Walsh Jesuit is third in the Division II poll, while Tallmadge is fifth and Field is No. 10.

In Division I, Hudson is eighth, followed by ninth-place Brunswick.

A three-year varsity letterwinner, Anderson finished in the school's top five with 623 career rebounds. She also averaged more than 10 points and 10 rebounds during her career.

OHSAA: Schools can play 3rd preseason contest

COLUMBUS: The Ohio High School Athletic Association says schools can play three preseason football contests this August, giving players one more opportunity to prepare for the regular season.

The association said Thursday that holding the extra contest would also give athletic departments another opportunity to bring in money from ticket sales.

Ohio High Magazine reports GlenOak senior C.J. McCollum won MVP honors at the Ohio-Kentucky all-star game at Thomas More College in northern Kentucky last weekend.

McCollum also recently won the Gatorade Ohio boys' basketball player of the year award, according to the site.

Twinsburg senior commits to Mount Union

Twinsburg senior DE Kevin Miller has committed to play football at Mount Union. Miller was an all-state, all-district and all-conference selection at Twinsburg.

He had 67.5 tackles with 9.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and an interception last season.

The Team USA roster includes Walsh Jesuit senior OL Brian Smith, who is a Northwestern recruit.

Walsh Jesuit senior offensive linemen Brian Smith was one of 36 high school players selected to play for Team USA this summer in the inaugural World Junior Championships at Fawcett Stadium, according to the Canton Repository.

Smith, 6-foot-7 and 277 pounds, is a Northwestern recruit.

Five Zips - including Speas - picked for U.S. U-18 team

Five University of Akron men’s soccer players have been selected by the U.S. Under-18 men’s national team to train in Carson, Calif., from Apr. 18-26, Zips head coach Caleb Porter announced.

The five UA players are rising sophomore Kofi Sarkodie and incoming freshmen Chad Barson, Scott Caldwell, Ben Speas and Zarek Valentin. The quintet already has played within the U.S. national team system.

Venuto to coach in showcase event

Louisville boys' basketball coach Rich Venuto will coach in the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Top 100 showcase this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at Capital University in Columbus.

Each of the 16 basketball districts of the OHSBCA will be represented by at least five underclass players. College coaches will have an opportunity to see the players participate in competitive drill and scrimmage situations.

Pavloff averaged 13.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, according to the report.

McKinley graduate transfers to Malone to swim

Eli Hawkins, a 2007 graduate of Canton McKinley High School, has recently signed a letter of intent to attend Malone University next fall and participate in the school’s inaugural intercollegiate swimming and diving season.

Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 sprint and freestyle swimmer, lettered three years at McKinley and is transferring to Malone from Oakland (MI) University. He was named the Bulldogs MVP in the 2006-2007 season and earned All-Federal League honors in the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. Academically, he was a member of the Honor Roll and the Merit Roll.

Cassell, who is listed as 5-feet-4 on the Greater Western Ohio Conference Web site, averaged 13.0 points, 4.4 assists, 2.9 steals and 2.1 rebounds for Butler last season.
