Massillon WR reportedly adds offer from Toledo

Toledo has reportedly offered Massillon junior wide receiver Marcus Whitfield, according to ScoutingOhio.com. It is the first offer for Whitfield, who is 6 feet and 170 pounds.

Massillon (9-1) plays host to Nordonia (7-3) in a Division I regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Stark County football rivals meet again

Canton McKinley (7-1) and Massillon (8-1) will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in their annual rivalry football game.

This is the 122nd meeting in the series. McKinley defeated Massillon in 2011 and 2010, and the teams split in 2009.

Copley girls soccer team gains confidence, Medina up next

Coach Wally Senk said his Indians team "won a thriller" against the host Wadsworth Grizzlies in a district semifinal game on Tuesday.

Mogadore and Norwayne are the final two remaining undefeated football teams in the area with 9-0 overall records.

Mogadore is set to make its 26th state playoff appearance since the tournament started in 1972, and Norwayne will be making its fourth trip.

Hudson's Bedell selects UA

Hudson senior Amanda Bedell will continue her academic and volleyball careers at the University of Akron.

Bedell, 5-foot-11½, said the Division I Zips recruited her to be a right-side hitter. She plans to major in early childhood education and pursue a career as a teacher and coach.

Firestone's Morgan commits to ODU

Firestone senior Brooke Morgan has orally committed to compete in track and field at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.

Morgan is set to high jump for the Division II school and might also run in the 400 meters, 800 and hurdle events.

Ellet seeks outright City Series football title

The Ellet football team (7-2, 5-0) can clinch its first outright City Series championship with a win tonight against visiting North (1-8, 1-4).

Ellet joined the league in 1971 under then-coach Bill McLain. Current coach Joe Yost took over the program in 1979 and guided the Orangemen to a share of the City Series title in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2006.

Dominick Orsini sets Hoban passing record

Senior quarterback Dominick Orsini broke the Archbishop Hoban single-game passing yardage record in a 48-21 win over visiting Cleveland Benedictine at Dowed Field on Friday night, Hoban spokesman Brian Saus said.

Orsini tossed for 369 yards against Benedictine, exceeding his 319-yard output in a Week 1 loss at Kent Roosevelt.

Woodridge's Hunter Niswander sets state PAT mark

Woodridge senior Hunter Niswander set a state record for most consecutive point-after touchdown kicks with eight on Friday night in a 59-7 win at Windham.

Bulldogs coach Eric Ervin said Niswander, a Northwestern University recruit, enters the final game of the season against Southeast having made 102 extra points in a row.

Ohio bows out of Big 33 Football Classic

Ohio will no longer have an all-star team compete in the Big 33 Football Classic.

The Big 33 Scholarship Foundation, Inc. announced the signing of a five-year agreement to pit Pennsylvania’s best high school football players against prep all-stars from Maryland. Pennsylvania and Maryland will play in the 57th PNC Big 33 Football Classic on June 15, 2013.

Highland's Jessica Porvasnik wins Division I state girls golf title

COLUMBUS: Highland senior Jessica Porvasnik won the Division I state individual championship in girls golf Saturday on the Gray Course at Ohio State University.

Porvasnik finished with a two-day total of even-par 140. She shot a 72 Saturday after carding a 68 Friday.

Revere, Walsh, WRA boast No. 1 soccer teams

Soccer teams from Revere, Walsh Jesuit and Western Reserve Academy finished the regular season No. 1 in the final state coaches poll.

Coach Sandor Jakab guided the Revere (15-0-1) boys to the No. 1 spot in the Division II poll, ahead of two-time defending state champion Dayton Carroll (12-0-4).

Golf champ Ian Holt of Stow returns to state

Stow junior Ian Holt returns to the Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course this weekend, the site where he shared the Division I boys golf championship last year with Beau Titsworth, a 2012 Cleveland St. Ignatius graduate.

“I definitely think my chances are good,” Holt said. “The experience definitely helps me. Having been there before and knowing what to expect is definitely beneficial. I think there is pressure there, but you just have to control it and stick to your game plan.”

Walsh Jesuit junior Chase Johnson enters his second Division I state golf tournament on a tear.

“I think he is playing at the best level of anyone in the state right now,” Walsh coach Joe Denton said. “He has played in 11 18-hole tournaments this year, and he has been under par in seven of them. He has seven wins and is averaging 70.5 per round. That is under par. He has just been sensational. He had a great summer that started all of this.”

Bees buzz south to golf

The Medina boys golf team will be making its fifth consecutive appearance in Columbus at the Division I state tournament under coach Jeanne Pritchard.

“As a coach it is always a challenge to take down a different group of kids,” Pritchard said. “We only have two that have been down there before, [seniors] Sean [Sherman] and Patrick [Luth]. This is a different team compared to the other ones, but I’m not surprised they made it to state.”

There will be two Nielsen entries in the Division I state girls golf tournament, Kent Roosevelt twin sophomores Kasey Nielsen and Kelly Nielsen.

“Kasey really worked hard on her game and is playing her best golf here at the end of year,” Rough Riders coach Bryan Harvey said. “Kelly is a grinder. She grinds it out. She gets it done with will and determination. Both girls are playing with confidence.”

The Walsh Jesuit state tennis trio

Walsh Jesuit advanced three to the Division I state tennis tournament — senior singles player Katelyn Hissong and the doubles unit of senior Anne-Marie Kurtz and junior Gina Costanzo.

“My three girls have gotten better each match as the season has progressed,” Walsh coach Rocco Cona said. “I have seen a lot of growth and a lot of improvement, both mentally and physically. They have played almost 30 matches, and the hope is that they keep getting better. All three of them have done exactly that. I think we’ll be in a situation where they will be in good battles this weekend.”

Chapman tossed seven touchdown passes in the game, and Thomas set single-season records for receiving yards (945), receptions (54) and touchdown receptions (14).

Woodridge's Hunter Niswander kicks for record

Niswander has made 94 in a row, Woodridge coach Eric Ervin said. Walsh Jesuit graduate Ross Martin holds the state record with 95 consecutive extra-point kicks.

Firestone senior Katie Miller commits to swim at Notre Dame

Firestone High School senior Katie Miller has orally committed to continue her academic and swimming careers at the University of Notre Dame.

“Notre Dame is just a good fit top to bottom for her, academically and athletically,” Firestone swim coach Cindy Virdo said. “She is going into engineering and the way the classes are set up she will not miss practices or meets. She might have some overlap with some labs or study groups. All of there classes are done by 3 [in the afternoon].”

Woodridge boys soccer set to host St. V-M tonight

City Series events to watch

The City Series will hold the girls volleyball championship at Kenmore at 6 p.m. Thursday and also hold the cross country championships for each gender Saturday morning at Goodyear Heights Metro Park in Akron.

Firestone and Ellet will meet for the third time this season to settle who is the volleyball champion. The teams split their regular season meetings with the visitor winning both matches.

Garfield not taking winless East lightly

The Garfield football team (3-4) plays East (0-7) at 7 p.m. Friday in a City Series matchup.

East has been shut out four consecutive weeks, but Garfield coach Bob Sax said the team gives a full effort.

“They are big up front and will come at you for four quarters,” Sax said. “We have to stay disciplined and focused for the entire game. We have to establish our running game and continue to work on our passing game.”
