Barberton’s Riley Ries, Macy Kaisk commit to play softball at Cleveland State University

Barberton seniors Riley Ries and Macy Kaisk have committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at Cleveland State University as members of the Vikings softball team.

“Riley and Macy have played together since they were seven years old and are excited to continue their playing careers together for coach [Becky] Norris and Cleveland State,” said Barberton coach Steve Kaisk, who is also Macy’s father.

Ries and Kaisk will both sign their national letter of intent in November.

Ries, a catcher, is a 2014 All-Northeast Ohio and Honorable Mention All-Ohio selection. She also plays basketball.

Rivals Hoban, St. V-M set to meet Friday in football game at UA

The Archbishop Hoban and St. Vincent-St. Mary football teams will renew acquaintances at 7 p.m. Friday at InfoCision Stadium on the campus of the University of Akron.

Sticking with tradition, the winner of the game will get the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ Shillelagh Trophy.

The series has had two long streaks recently. The Irish have won the past seven games since 2007, after the Knights put together nine consecutive victories in the rivalry game from 1998-2006.

Coach Dan Boarman is 7-0 against Hoban since being named St. V-M coach after a successful 17-year stint as Copley’s coach. This will be the second game in the rivalry for Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell.

Firestone defeats North 4-0 to win City Series boys soccer title

CORRECTION

Firestone defeated North 4-0 in a boys soccer match Tuesday to clinch the City Series championship at the Copley Road Soccer Complex.

A few players’ names were inaccurately reported to the Akron Beacon Journal.

The four players who scored goals in the second half for Firestone were senior Joshua Hendrickson, sophomore Sean Cooke, senior Lucien Milford and senior Brian Gomez.

Copley, Revere, WRA hold No. 1 ranking in OSSCA state polls

The Copley, Revere and Western Reserve Academy boys soccer teams are ranked No. 1 in their respective division in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association state polls.

Copley is atop the Division I list, Revere is atop the Division II list and WRA is atop the Division III list.

Revere is the defending state champion in Division II.

Hudson is No. 7 in Division I.

Hudson girls earn No. 1 ranking in OSSCA Division I state poll

The Hudson girls soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I state poll.

Four other area schools are ranked in Division I; Medina at seventh, Strongsville at eighth, Walsh Jesuit at ninth and Brunswick at 10th.

Walsh is the defending state champion in Division I.

Hudson is scheduled to play at Medina at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Associated Press released its second weekly state football poll, and several area teams are included.

Hudson is ranked No. 3 in Division I and Brunswick is No. 14. No. 1 Cincinnati Moeller and No. 2 Mentor are just ahead of Hudson.

In Division II, Massillon is No. 1 and Nordonia is No. 9.

The Division III rankings include Aurora (fourth) and Tallmadge (ninth).

List of 4-0 & 3-1 area football teams is extensive

State-ranked football teams Hudson, Massillon, Nordonia, Aurora, Tallmadge, Triway, Canton Central Catholic and Mogadore are among a large group of teams at with a 4-0 record heading into Week 5.

The other area 4-0 teams are Archbishop Hoban, Copley, Chippewa, Crestwood, GlenOak, Jackson and Stow and Streetsboro.

The list of 3-1 area teams is extensive too with Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Brunswick, Ellet, Hillsdale, Louisville, Northwest, Norwayne, Revere, St. Thomas Aquinas, Strongsville, Wadsworth and Woodridge.

The Ohio Association of Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches released its state cross country poll, and the Lake and Louisville boys and Nordonia girls are each top 10 in Division I.

The Lake boys team is No. 4 in the Division I poll and Louisville is No. 7. The poll also includes Jackson at 12th and Hudson at 14th.

Nordonia is sixth in the Division I girls poll and Brunswick is 16th.

In Division II, St. Vincent-St. Mary is No. 2 in the girls rankings and No. 5 in the boys.

Firestone set to meet North in City Series boys soccer showdown Tuesday

The Firestone and North boys soccer teams will meet at 5 p.m. today at the Copley Road Soccer Complex in what will effectively determine who will be the City Series champion.

Firestone has won the City Series boys soccer title every year since 1994, said Joe Howard, the Akron Public Schools Program Manager of Interscholastic Athletics.

North is hoping to win its first boys soccer league title and in the process end Firestone’s streak of holding the top spot for 20 years.

Firestone (4-4-4, 2-0-0) features senior co-captains Lucien Milford and Joshua Hendrickson under coach Michael Householder.

St. V-M senior Jibri Blount commits to Cleveland State for basketball

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Jibri Blount has committed to play basketball at Cleveland State University.

Blount, 17, is 6-foot-5 and 220-pounds.

"I think it is a great opportunity for Jibri," St. V-M coach Dru Joyce II said. "[Cleveland State’s] Gary Waters is a great coach and what he has done in terms of developing kids is impressive. Jibri is a kid in high school basketball where he somewhat plays out of position [at forward]. Coach Waters recognizes that, but it is willing to work with him and help him develop the perimeter skills [to be a wing].

"Coach Waters sees the leadership, work ethic and all the other intangibles."

Massillon senior Reggie Rogers commits to Marshall for football

Massillon senior Reggie Rogers has committed to play football at Marshall University.

Rogers, who formerly lived in Akron and played at Firestone, announced his college decision Sunday on Twitter and Instagram.

“I am now committed to Marshall University!” Rogers wrote on Instagram. “I could never picture making it this far for me, my mom and my family! The ultimate goal was a free education and I’m getting that now! When I get to Marshall I’m going to continue to work as hard as possible and remain humble! #WeAreMassillon #WeAreMarshall #330”

He also wrote “I am beyond blessed from the man upstairs! #DreamsToReality  #WeAreMassillon #WeAreMarshall #330” on Twitter.

Canton McKinley senior Eric Glover-Williams selected to play in All-America Game

Canton McKinley senior Eric Glover-Williams has been selected to play in the 2015 Under Armour All-America High School Football Game.

Glover-Williams was presented an honorary game jersey at his high school Friday morning during the American Family Insurance Selection Tour. The event was part of the three-month selection tour for the game.

Glover-Williams is an Ohio State University recruit who plays running back, quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back at McKinley. He is one of 90 players selected to compete in the eighth-annual Under Armour All-America Game, which features some of the top high school seniors in the United States.

The 2015 Under Armour All-America Game is scheduled to be played Jan. 2 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be nationally televised live on ESPN2 at a time to be determined.

Buchtel set to host Firestone in key City Series volleyball match

Buchtel will host Firestone at 6 p.m. Thursday in a key City Series volleyball match.

Firestone is atop the league standings at 9-2 overall and 7-0 in the City Series, and Buchtel is close behind at 8-3, 7-1.

Firestone is the defending City Series percentage and playoff champions. The Falcons are led by five seniors – Janelle Perry, Destynee Lovejoy, Julia Bowden, Taliyah Carter and Dara Perry. Sophomores Portia Snipes, Lydia Sherman and Terynn Williams are also impact players with freshman Hannah Fortune for Falcons coach Stacey Myers.

“I think the reason that we have been able to win 9 of 11 matches is because we’ve spent a lot of time on mental preparation and team building,” Myers said. “Half of our starting line up consists of first year sophomores and a freshman. We have been working hard to not only develop skills of individual players, but to grow as a team together. Our focus has been on creating a champion attitude that transcends the court.”

The Firestone boys soccer team beat Ellet 11-3 in a City Series match Tuesday at the Copley Road Soccer Complex.

Junior Lars Martschausky, junior Teylor Blanchard and freshman Jacob Weber each scored two goals for the Falcons (2-2-4, 1-0-0).

Sophomore Jacob Kohler, freshmen David Wright and Mikah Ackerman and seniors Lucien Milford and Joshua Hendrickson scored one goal apiece.

Barberton set to honor 50th anniversary of 1964 football team Friday

Barberton will honor the 50th anniversary of it 1964 football team Friday night.

The Magics are scheduled to host Alliance for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Barberton Athletic Director Rob Culbertson said there will be a dinner in the Barberton High School Commons on Friday at 5:15 p.m. and pregame introductions at 6:30 p.m. Festivities start at 4:30 p.m. when people are scheduled to arrive.

The 1964 Barberton football team went 8-1 and is considered one of the top teams in the history of the school.

Firestone volleyball tops Ellet to remain undefeated in City Series

The host Firestone volleyball team topped City Series rival Ellet on Tuesday by scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 26-24.

Senior Taliyah Carter had 17 kills to guide the Falcons (7-2, 6-0) past the Orangemen (4-3, 4-2). Seniors Destynee Lovejoy (26 assists, 21 service points) and Julia Bowden (13 digs) also played key roles for Firestone.

Woodridge boys soccer is on a roll with undefeated record

The Woodridge boys soccer team remained undefeated Tuesday night following a 3-2 victory over Garrettsville.

The Bulldogs upped their record to 7-0 overall and 4-0 this season in the Portage Trail Conference under coach Nate Rausch, who said the G-Men were PTC champions last season.

Woodridge has scored 39 goals this season and allowed six. Seniors Ian Mullins, Matt Tannous and Chase Edwards are tri-captains and key players along with classmates Marc Haas and Nick Cochrun.

Tannous leads Woodridge with 12 goals. Caleb Whitaker has eight goals and Mullins has five goals. Whitaker leads the team with six assists and Zach Kumar has three assists.

Nordonia senior Alex Alders commits to Central Michigan for baseball

Nordonia senior Alex Alders has committed to continue his academic and athletic careers at Central Michigan University as a member of the Chippewas baseball team.

Alders is a three-sport athlete at Nordonia and is 6-foot-2 and 205-pounds.

He plays wide receiver, defensive back and returns kickoffs and punts on the Knights football team under coach Jeff Fox, guard on the basketball team under coach Matt Cash and center field on the baseball team under coach Drew Hoisington.

Alders, 18, entered his senior season with eight varsity letters, three each in football and basketball and two in baseball.

Revere senior Sam Sustersic commits to Dayton for baseball

Revere senior Sam Sustersic has made a commitment to continue his academic and baseball careers at the University of Dayton.

Sustersic is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound outfielder. He is a three-time All-Suburban League selection, earning first team honors as a sophomore, second team honors as a junior and an honorable mention as a freshman.

Sustersic had a .397 batting average with 21 runs batted in last year, and hit .415 with nine doubles and 24 runs batted in the year prior.

Phil Heyn and Jason Cottrell of Revere said Sustersic has a 3.87 grade-point average and plan to study Pre-Med at Dayton. He will sign a national letter of intent in November.

Coventry set to hire Chris DeShon as wrestling coach

Coventry Athletic Director Neal Kopp said Monday that the Board of Education is expected to approve the hiring of Chris DeShon as the Comets wrestling coach at a school board meeting on September 16.

DeShon, a 1996 Coventry graduate, was a three-time state placer, a member of the last state championship team for Coventry and an eight-time Freestyle state champion.

“Chris DeShon has twenty years of coaching experience, and his resume includes positions with St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and The North Akron Wrestling Club,” Kopp said in a press release. “Along with experience and tradition, DeShon brings Bill Barger and Randy Glover, two Ohio high school wrestling legends, as advisors to the program.Chris DeShon is excited and honored to be back at Coventry High School as the next head wrestling coach.”

DeShon said in the statement: “The Coventry Community is a very special place to me and I look forward to taking this program to the next level.”

The Warriors and Fighting Irish continue their rivalry tonight with opposite records.

Walsh lost its home opener in Week 1 to Youngstown Ursuline by a score of 13-9. Jacob Stack started as Walsh’s quarterback last week following a preseason injury that sidelined Pat Ford. Mark Bedell and Anthony Rozum are a couple of playmakers to watch, and Chris Kazimir and Joe Tupta are also key players for coach Gerry Rardin.

St. V-M won its 2014 season opener at home over Garfield by a score of 45-10. The Irish won Division III state championships in 2012 and 2013, and have a 29-2 record in their last 31 games.

Friday Night Football: Ellet at Tallmadge

Ellet at Tallmadge, 7 p.m.

The Orangemen and Blue Devils both registered victories in Week 1 with Ellet beating visiting Springfield 49-28 and Tallmadge topping host Ravenna 31-20.

Ellet relies on its running backs, Jacob Ivery and Cle’Von Burch, behind a strong offensive line that includes Jacob Jones, Lucas Renick and Charles Pardee. Coach Joe Yost was impressed by his team’s rushing attack last week, and also by the play of sophomore quarterback Garrett Haverstick.

Maurice Mackey, Jae’Vante Ray and Cody Hoskinson are solid players for Ellet.

Friday Night Football: Manchester at Woodridge

Manchester at Woodridge, 7 p.m.

Manchester enters the game 0-1 following a 28-7 loss to Hillsdale. Coach Jim France and his staff will look to rally the Panthers against a talented Woodridge team. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after defeating CVCA 56-28 in Week 1. Woodridge coach Jeff Decker earned his first win as a coach with Don Baker starring at running back.

“It was great to get through that first game,” Decker said. “Like worrying about all the non-on field coaching stuff like pre-game routine, pre-game speech, delegating to other coaches their responsibilities, getting to know each coaches strengths during a game and how to make adjustments, etc. Now that I have gone through all that once I can focus more on coaching the kids themselves and making sure we get better each week. Friday nights are so awesome. I now feel like I can more fully enjoy the game itself.”

Decker praised his team for playing with “so much enthusiasm and intensity” last Friday.

High school football: Week 2 continues Friday following a couple games Thursday

Week 2 of the high school football season kicked off Thursday night with Revere beating Parma Heights Valley Forge 28-14 and Massillon defeating GlenOak 17-14.

The visiting Minutemen upped their record to 2-0 with quarterback Chase Costanzo throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for another.

Danny Robinson and J.D. Crabtree each rushed for a touchdown and Andrew David kicked a 50-yard field goal to lead the Tigers (2-0) over the host Golden Eagles (1-1).

Copley, Walsh share No. 1 spot in Division I boys soccer state poll

The Copley and Walsh Jesuit boys soccer teams are tied for first in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I state poll.

Copley has been very impressive this season with a 5-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the Suburban League. The Indians have outscored opponents 31-1.

Midfielder Skye Harter, defender Holden Torrens and goalkeeper Ameer Mubarak are senior tri-captains for Copley.

“The strength of this team is its unity,” Copley coach David Antal said. “The players have really taken it upon themselves to come together and gel. They share common goals.  Additionally, the balance between our offense and defense has been great thus far.”

St. Vincent-St. Mary is ranked No. 1 in the Division II girls poll and the Fighting Irish boys are ranked No. 6.

Elsewhere in the Division II girls poll, Woodridge is seventh, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy is 14th and Crestwood is 17th. Marlington is 17th in the Division II boys poll and Crestwood is tied for 20th.

The scholarship offer is the first for Morris, who is a defensive back and tight end for the Knights. Morris is 6-foot-4 and 195-pounds.

Jenkins, a center fielder and Hinckley resident, helped Walsh win North Coast League Blue Division championships in 2013 and 2014. The 2014 Walsh team compiled an undefeated regular season, was ranked No. 3 in the CBS MaxPreps Xcellent 50 national baseball rankings and then lost to Hudson in a Division I district final.

Jenkins earned the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2014 NCL season, and was also named first team All-Ohio and first-team All-Inland Northeast District. He compiled a batting average of .507 as a junior with six home runs and 37 runs batted in.

“Blake possesses such an abundant set of tools across the board and truly has a great deal of potential,” Walsh coach said Chris Kaczmar said. “He is just a superb athlete who not only gets the most out of himself on the field, but is also an extremely hard worker that is passionate about making improvements every day.

Tim Flossie suspended as Firestone football coach, Billy Adair named interim coach

The Akron Public Schools is investigating Firestone football coach Tim Flossie for alleged inappropriate actions following a game Thursday night at Archbishop Hoban.

“Tim Flossie has been suspended pending an HR [Human Resources] investigation and Billy Adair has been named the interim head coach,” said Mark Williamson, the APS Director of Communications. “We don’t know how long the HR investigation will take. I don’t know how far into the season we will go until we have an answer to this. We just don’t know at this point.

“The new principal [Kenya Harrington Jr.] at Firestone had a meeting with the other coaches and heard from them. He also sent out an email to all the players. The focus is on the players to stay together as a team.”

Firestone opened the 2014 football season at Hoban with a game Thursday, and the host Knights topped the Falcons 24-0.
