Rardin: Cook will do well at combine

Walsh Jesuit junior QB Connor Cook is expected to attend the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio next month. Walsh Jesuit coach Gerry Rardin said it's a great opportunity for Cook to gain some national exposure at the event.

"Connor will do well," Rardin said. "He is a great athlete.  Great opportunity for great exposure."

Pickerington Central senior DB Malcolm Pannell (6-0, 165)  has reportedly made an oral commitment to play at Kent State, according to ScoutingOhio.com. Pannell also reportedly had an offer from Ohio University.

Cook, Price selected to national combine

Walsh Jesuit junior QB Connor Cook and Wooster junior WR-DB Duke Price have been selected to participate in the 2010 U.S. Army National Combine Jan. 7-9 in San Antonio.

The underclassmen combine is held during the same week as the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome. The bowl game features some of the nation's top seniors.

Report: RB to visit Akron

Lancaster senior strong safety/running back Nathan Carpenter is reportedly going to visit Akron on Jan. 15, according to ESPN.com. He is also reportedly considering schools that include Ohio University and Toledo.

Potts making college visits

Louisville senior MLB Hunter Potts (6-2, 225) has been visiting some Mid-American Conference schools and some NAIA programs, according to Louisville coach Paul Farrah.

Potts was first-team all-Beacon Journal this season. He had 91 tackles.

Lombardo to coach All-Star team

Highland High School Head Football Coach Tom Lombardo has been selected to serve as the head coach of the North Team in the Ohio All-Star Classic. The game is set for April 23, 2010 in Columbus.

Coach Lombardo was nominated by his peers and selected by the regional directors of the OHSFCA. He has previously participated in this game as an assistant coach for the North in 2002.

Highland's Tien earns soccer honor

Highland High School senior Stephen Tien became the first soccer player in Highland history to be named to the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Team.

Tien, a defender on the varsity soccer team, is 1 of only 48 in the country to be selected to an All-Region Team and 1 of 18 in the East Region.
He is the son of Stephen and Andrea Tien of Hinckley.

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) will induct Northwest coach James Lower on April 17, 2010 as part of its 24th class. The ceremony will take place at the Columbus Airport Marriott in Columbus.

Cincinnati player visited Kent State

Indian Hill senior QB Sam Hendricks took an official visit to Kent State this past weekend, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Hendricks is being recruited as a halfback or wide receiver.

Hendricks threw for 1,129 yards and rushed for 1,487 yards and 24 touchdowns this past season.

Orrville confirms Miller's commitment

Orrville senior WR-DB Sam Miller orally committed to Kent State on Monday night, according to Orrville AD Kent Smith.

Miller was a Division IV first-team all-state selection in 2008 and '09. He plays wide receiver and safety for Orrville.

Hudson catcher commits to Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame may have lost a foootball coach, but has gained a brother combination for its baseball team.

Forrest Johnson has signed a letter of intent to play for the Fighting Irish. The Hudson catcher, who will be a senior, hit .300 with 14 RBI but more impressively threw out 14 runners last spring as a junior. He has beeen a starter since his sophomore season.

Walsh Jesuit players receiving college attention

Two Walsh Jesuit juniors are getting several college looks, according to Walsh coach Gerry Rardin.

Quarterback Connor Cook (6-5, 200) runs a 4.49 in the 40 and has a great arm and speed, Rardin said. OT/DE Adam Redmond (6-6, 225) is very athletic for his height and weight.

Gulley commits to Syracuse

Garfield senior RB Tyson Gulley orally committed to Syracuse on Wednesday night, according to Garfield coach Bob Sax.

Gulley also had several offers from Mid-American Conference schools. He had scheduled an official visit to Central Michigan Dec. 12, but made the commitment to Syracuse on Wednesday night.

High school football championships are special

As I prepare to do the in-studio analysis for SportTime Ohio's coverage of the six state championship games Friday and Saturday, here a few thoughts about those games and the previous weeks of playoffs.

*Massillon and Canton McKinley played some terrific football before exiting. I beg fans of both to show your appreciation to coaches Jason Hall and Ron Johnson. Trust me, both men did great jobs of preparing their teams and giving them chances to win. That is all you can ask of them.

Porter, an offensive lineman, entered the NFL earlier this season as an undrafted rookie free agent with the New England Patriots.

Under Armour All-America team

Two Orrville girls' volleyball players have been named Under Armour All-America honorable mention selections.

Senior setter Hannah Brenner (Clemson commit) and outside hitter Erin Short (Eastern Michigan commit) have been named to the team. The team is presented by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
