Minerva forward to play for Marquette
Minerva forward Chelsie Butler has orally committed to play for the Marquette women’s basketball program, according to Tom Jenkins of the Ohio Girls’ Basketball Report.
Butler, who will be a senior this upcoming season, was Division II second-team all-state last season.

Canton South graduate, and former Ohio State Buckeye, Ron Bourquin was released by the Detroit Tigers organization Wednesday.
Bourquin, a second round selection by the Tigers in 2006, appears to be a casualty of post MLB draft shuffling, which is ordinary among major league organizations.

LeBron James makes dramatic appearance in Akron
Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James made a dramatic appearance Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium on the campus of the University of Akron.
James walked through a side entrance into a nearly empty stadium and made his way down to the playing field after thousands of fans were already gone or leaving the "LeBron Appreciation Day" event that was sponsored by several area businesses.

Massillon senior-to-be WR Devin Smith (6-2, 175) has reportedly made an oral commitment to Ohio State, according to ScoutingOhio.com and other reports.
Smith, one of the state's top players in the 2011 class, also reportedly had offers from Kansas, Purdue, Penn State, Illinois, Boston College, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Michigan and others.

WRA to play in Browns High School Invitational
The Cleveland Browns will welcome 15 high school football teams to the club’s Berea Training Facility on Saturday, June 19, for the inaugural Cleveland Browns High School Invitational starting at 9:00 a.m.
Teams will be divided in to three flights (five teams in each flight) and each team will play a 7-on-7 style tournament in their respective flight. Following flight play, teams will be seeded and play in a single elimination bracket. Teams participating in this year’s invitational include:

Basketball stars Alston and Howard competing for youth Olympic spots
Colorado Springs, Colo. - Thirty-six athletes are participating in the 2010 USA Basketball Women's U17 World Championship/Youth Olympic Games Team Trials this week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., including 10 who helped USA Basketball capture gold at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Mexico City.
The 36 athletes will battle for one of 12 roster spots on the 2010 USA Basketball Women's U17 World Championship Team or one of four positions on the 2010 USA Youth Olympic Games Team.

Walsh Jesuit's big three all selected in MLB Draft
The Ohio high school baseball season ended Sunday, but Walsh Jesuit’s trio of dynamic senior players is still finding ways to put themselves in the school record books.
Seniors John Fasola (Los Angeles Dodgers, 36th round, 1,102 overall), Greg Greve (San Francisco Giants, 45, 1368) and Tyler Skulina (Oakland A’s, 46, 1385) were all selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday.

The New York Mets selected Firestone High School graduate Jonathan Kountis in the 19th round Tuesday of the Major League Baseball Draft.
"This is a great feeling," said Kountis, who was tabbed with the 572nd overall pick. "When my name got called, I was like on cloud nine."

Perry won the Division I state softball title with a 10-0 victory in six innings over Grove City on Saturday at Firestone Stadium.
The Panthers (27-3) were unranked in the final state coaches' poll and the Greyhounds (28-5) finished first.

We fell behind on our updates while chasing athletes down for interviews toward the end of the meet, but you can find complete results by clicking here.
Final team results (updated at 8:16 p.m.): Warren Harding won the team title with 47 points. Wadsworth had the best performance among locals with a fourth-place finish.

Hillsdale defeats Piketon 6-2 at Div. III state softball semifinal; plays in championship game 7 p.m. Saturday
Hillsdale had several clutch hits and took advantage of a shaky Piketon defense as the Falcons defeated the Red Streaks 6-2 in the Division III state softball semifinal at Firestone Stadium.
In the first inning, Kelsey Dropsey singled and scored on triple by Rashel Louis for 1-0 lead in bottom of the first inning.

Pleasant Hill Newton Local defeats E. Canton 7-3 at Div. IV state semifinal
Pleasant Hill Newton Local capitalized on on error and several bunt singles to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning and another in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 and defeat East Canton 6-3 Friday afternoon at the Division IV state semifinal softball game at Firestone Stadium.
The Hornets committed five errors and outstanding bunting technique by the Indians made all the difference.

East Canton ready to play state softball semifinal; Perry to face Grove City Saturday in Div. I final
Overcast skies still plague Firestone Stadium as East Canton gets ready to play Division IV state semifibal softball game against Pleasant Hill Newton Local.
The winner plays defending Division IV state champion Strasburg-Franklin at 4 p.m. Saturday. S-F (26-6) defeated New Riegel (24-7) 5-1 on a three-hitter by the combine efforts of Carly Clark and Kasey Gerber with 12 strikeouts. Gerber, Erin Metzger, Melissa Sibley, Karlu DiBacco and Ariel Jones each had an RBI for S-F.

Division I state softball semifinal moves to 10 a,m, Friday; DIV and DIII Friday schedules revamped
The Division I state semifinal softball game between Grove City and Liberty Township Lakota East at Firestone Stadium has been postyponed. Officials are trying to remove excess water from the infield after a heavy shower hit around 6 p.m. and lasted 20 minutes, but the teams were never able to take the field.
The game has been moved to 10 a.m. Friday at Firestone Stadium.

Perry defeats Holland Springfield 5-0 in DI softball semifinal
Shelbi Tilton's RBI single and Jayla Saibene hit a two-run double into the gap in right center field in a three-run fourth inning and Perry goes on to defeat Holland Springfield 5-0 lead at the Division I softball state semifinal at Firestone Stadium.
Panther pitcher Casi Rohr finished strong, retiring 12 straight batters and the final trio on strikeouts. Rohr, a junior, had 10 strikeouts and gave up just three hits and two walks, both in the first inning.

Poland Seminary wins DII semifinal in 7th; Perry game starts at 3:30
A bases-loaded error on a force play at home plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Poland Seminary a 5-4 win over New Concord John Glenn in the Division II state softball semifinal at Firestone Stadium.
A solo home run by Jenna Modic of Poland Seminary in the bottom of the third inning give the Bulldogs 1-0 lead over New Concord John Glenn after four innings.

Hebron Lakewood wins DII semi; Poland Seminary, New Concord begins
Defending Division III champion Hebron Lakewood(28-5) has moved up to Division II and survived its semifinal game with a 5-4 come from behind win over Greenville (30-3) Thursday morning at Firestone Stadium.
The Lancers trailed 4-3 after the Green Wave scored four in the top of the sixth, but put two on the board iin the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Chelsea Brewer, was hit by a pitch, had two hits including a triple and RBI, catcher Caitlin Houk walked twice, doubled and drove in a run, and winning pitcher Alyssa Patznick (21-3) had a hit and drove in a run.

St. Vincent-St. Mary junior DB Doran Grant is ranked the nation's No. 23 player overall and Ohio's top player in the 2011 class in the Rivals.com Rivals100 national rankings.
Grant has several high-profile scholarship offers including Ohio State, Southern California, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame, according to Rivals.com.
