Pleasant Hill Newton Local defeats E. Canton 7-3 at Div. IV state semifinal

Pleasant Hill Newton Local capitalized on on error and several bunt singles to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning and another in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 and defeat East Canton 6-3 Friday afternoon at the Division IV state semifinal softball game at Firestone Stadium.

 The Hornets committed five errors and outstanding bunting technique by the Indians made all the difference.

A long two-run home run to left field by East Canton pitcher Letitia Bittinger with Heidi Vacco aboard tied game at  3-3 after five innings.

Two East Canton errors in the top of the fourth inning produced a run for Pleasant Hill Newton Local as the Indians went up 3-1 after three-and-a-half innings.

A two-out bloop single by No. 9 hitter Andee Welbaum that fell behind the second baseman plated two runs in the top of the second inning as Pleasant Hill Newton Local lead East Canton 2-1

East Canton had a 1-0 after the first inning when Cecily Garrett's two-out double off the glove of the center fielder drove in Heidi Vacco, who singled to lead off the  inning.

The Hornets season ends at 27-3 and the Indians are 26-5 and will play 4 p.m. Saturday against defending state champion Strasburg-Franklin, a 5-1 winner over New Riegel earlier in the day.
