Former Buchtel star Corey Smith commits to Ohio State for football

Former Buchtel High School standout wide receiver Corey Smith has committed to play football at Ohio State University, according to Brad Bournival of espn.com.

Smith will have two years of college eligibility remaining at OSU after playing one year apiece at East Mississippi Community College and Grand Rapids Community College.

Revere senior Jason Tretter commits to Purdue for football

Revere senior Jason Tretter will continue his academic and football careers on scholarship at Purdue University.

Tretter is a 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive tackle. He was an Associated Press Division II second-team All-Ohio selection as a senior and first-team All-Suburban League.

Recruiting roundup: Kyle Kempt commits to Oregon State

Massillon senior QB Kyle Kempt made an oral commitment to Oregon State tonight.

Kempt, one of the area's top players in the 2013 class, had been committed to Cincinnati but decommitted from the Bearcats in December after Butch Jones left for Tennessee. 

Revere senior OT Jason Tretter has orally committed to Purdue, according to ScoutingOhio.com

Bowling Green has reportedly offered Canton McKinley junior outside linebacker Jamal Davis II, according to ESPN.com. Davis, who is 6 feet 2 and 205 pounds, also has interest from the likes of Louisville, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and several others, according to ESPN.com.

Bill Raftery uttered the words “Send it in, Jerome!” on ESPN on a Monday night in Pittsburgh over two decades ago to describe a dunk that is still in sports fan’s conscience around the country.

Friday marked the 25th anniversary of when Lane, an Akron resident, shattered the glass on a backboard in a men’s college basketball game with a right-handed dunk over Providence 6-foot guard Carlton Screen at Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House on Jan. 25, 1988.

Stow set to honor basketball teams from 1990s on Friday night

Stow boys basketball coach Dave Close said three Bulldogs teams from the 1990’s will be honored Friday night when Stow hosts Barberton.

Close said the celebration is part of a 20-year reunion. The players from the teams of the classes 1992, 1993 and 1994 will be recognized before the start of the game, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Close said a majority of the players from those teams will be in attendance.

Miles, who is 6-3 and 250 pounds, is ranked the state’s No. 69 player in the 2013 class, according to Rivals.com. He also reportedly had offers from Nebraska, Kentucky, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Toledo, West Virginia and Western Michigan, according to ESPN.com.

Event set for tonight celebrates fall sports

The 71st annual Touchdown Club Fall Sports Banquet is set for tonight at Guys Party Centre.

Festivities will begin at 6 pm and over 210 student-athletes and coaches will be honored. Tickets are $30 and can be ordered by calling Dick Rinella at 330-773-4626. Athletes will be honored in football, volleyball, soccer, cross country, golf and tennis.

Cincinnati Colerain senior running back Chris Davis will reportedly take an official visit to the University of Akron on Jan. 25, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Davis, who is 5 feet 10 and 185 pounds, was a first-team all-Greater Miami Conference selection this past season. He rushed for 437 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 35 passes for 617 yards and four touchdowns for the Division I powerhouse.

Davis also had college interest from Cincinnati, Ohio State and Toledo among other schools the past year.

Hoban’s Jamie Dean picks Ashland

Archbishop Hoban senior Jamie Dean has announced that she will continue her academic and soccer careers at Ashland University.

Hoban spokesperson Randy Thomas said Dean was a three-year letter winner for the Knights, scoring 28 career goals and adding seven assists during her career. In 2012 she was a team captain for coach Brian Misanko and set a school record for single season goals scored with 21. She received first-team All-North Coast League and GASSCA second-team All-District honors for her play during the 2012 season.

Perry 2nd in state wrestling poll

Perry is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Division I state wrestling coaches’ poll.

The Panthers have 112 points in the season’s fifth weekly poll. Brecksville is fourth, Solon seventh and Wadsworth eighth.

In Division II, CVCA is second, followed by Walsh Jesuit at No. 5. St. Vincent-St. Mary is No. 10.

Waynedale is the top-ranked team in Division III. Rootstown is No. 8, followed by Tuslaw at No. 9.

Peltz, 59, guided the Cardinals to a 13-17 record during the past three seasons, which was marked improvement for a program that struggled to win consistently.

St. Vincent-St. Mary linebacker Dante Booker has been named to the MaxPreps 2012 Junior All-American Second Team.

Booker, who is 6 feet 4 and 215 pounds, was Ohio’s Associated Press Division III co-defensive player of the year. He had 72 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions, according to MaxPreps.

Booker helped St. Vincent-St. Mary win the the Division III state title Dec. 1 in Canton with a 42-21 win over Bellevue. Booker reportedly had scholarship offers from Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, according to Rivals.com. He also reportedly has an offer from Notre Dame, according to 247 Sports.

Massillon's Gareon Conley to start in Under Armour game

Massillon senior cornerback Gareon Conley is listed as a starting cornerback on tonight’s Under Armour All-America Game roster.

The all-star game, in its sixth season, will be played at Tropicana Field at 5 p.m. today and will be televised live on ESPN.

McKinley's Glover-Williams earns All-American honors

Canton McKinley sophomore quarterback/running back Eric Glover-Williams was named a MaxPreps 2012 Sophomore All-American Thursday by the national high school sports site.

Glover-Williams, who is being recruited as an athlete by multiple college programs, is 5 feet 11 and 165 pounds.

According to MaxPreps, he rushed for 1,574 yards and 22 touchdowns and threw for 1,114 yards and 12 scores this season.

He reportedly has offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan State and Nebraska, according to 247 Sports.
