Rittman ends 27-game losing streak with 27-0 win

The Rittman football team broke a 27-game losing streak with a convincing 27-0 victory over host Conotton Valley this past Saturday.

First-year Rittman coach Brent Besancon said prior to the season that "obviously the goal is to just get the monkey off our back."

The Indians did just that in Week 1.

Junior Brandon Bauman rushed for two touchdowns and gained 132 yards on 18 carries to lead Rittman’s offense. Bauman also returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown and converted three point after touchdowns.

"So far so good," Besancon said. "I think the kids have been real focused from day one (of practice). Their goal was to end the streak and have some fun. I wanted the kids to realize that we are not those teams from the past three years. This is 2009 and this is a different group of kids and a different coaching staff."

Quarterback Dustin Sharier threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Devyn Turbeville to give the Indians a 7-0 in the first half. Sharier completed 8-of-15 passes for 162 yards and Turbeville had four receptions for 106 yards.

"He went out and moved the chains for us," Besancon said of Sharier.

Besancon said the shutout was a product of a "collective effort" defensively. He did praise Bauman and seniors Levi Swisher and David Lloyd for their defensive presence.
