Sax: Rams making progress

By mdyer Published: August 12, 2010

Garfield football coach Bob Sax said he is seeing progress every day with his team and he is encouraged by the preseason workouts.

Garfield will scrimmage Barberton on Saturday and Northwest on Aug. 19.

"I like the way the kids have been competing so far," Sax said. "I feel like we have a lot of competition for playing time across the board. We return a lot of starters, but the younger kids have stepped up and are pushing for playing time."

Sax said a lot of decisions on playing time will be made in the next week and a half.

Darius Hoisten and Deon Lewis are still competing for the quarterback position. Hoisten is the returner and is looking more confident this year. "He has been throwing the ball well and making good decisions," Sax said. "I like the way he has taken control of the team."

Garfield opens the season at Hoban at 7 p.m. Aug. 26.
