Six Walsh Jesuit senior football players select colleges

Walsh football coach Gerry Rardin said six seniors have committed to play college football: Bryan DiCillo (Ohio), Mike Knoll (Boston College), Spenser Theiss (Baldwin Wallace), Matt McShane (Dayton), Alex Conley (Duquesne) and John Conner (Ashland).

DiCillo is a linebacker, Knoll is a kicker, McShance is a linebacker and Conley, Theiss and Conner are linemen.

Hoban, Walsh players garner interest from colleges, seek to return to playoffs

Archbishop Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell and Walsh Jesuit coach Gerry Rardin are excited for the 2014 football season with several talented players returning.

Hoban and Walsh both missed out on the 2013 playoffs, Hoban in Division III and Walsh in Division II, but each has aspirations of joining the postseason party again.

Six Archbishop Hoban football players commit to colleges

Archbishop Hoban football coach Tim Tyrrell said six seniors have committed to play college football: D’Angelo James (Mount Union), Kylan Hood (University of Charleston), Jake Tersigni (Dayton), Domenic Grosso (Walsh University), Anthony Krim II (University of Charleston) and Vince Buzzi (Ave Maria).

James and Buzzi are linebackers, Hood and Tersigni play wide receiver and defensive back, and Grosso and Krim are linemen.

Jackson, Copley earn state top 10 rankings in boys tennis

Jackson and Copley are both ranked in the top 10 in the first Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I state poll.

Jackson (9-0, 6-0 Federal League) is No. 7 and features sophomores Joey Thomas, Jake Zalenski and Anthony Kanam. Copley (10-3, 6-0 Suburban League) is No. 8 and is led by senior Andrew Ong, sophomore Gavin Aten and freshman Kevin Du.

Twinsburg senior runners commit to Akron, Kent State

Twinsburg Athletic Director Mark Maslona announced Thursday that two seniors have signed national letters of intent to compete in cross country and track and field for area colleges.

Garrett Crichlow signed his letter of intent to attend the University of Akron. He plans to major in Kinesiology and compete for the Zips.

Cuyahoga Community College women's basketball signs area players

The Cuyahoga Community College women’s basketball team recently received signed letters of intent from six senior high school players, four of which are from the area.

Akron City Series products Whiaunna Jeffries, Brianna Sojourner and Destini Turner are headed to Tri-C along with Strongsville center Keri Hill.

St. V-M senior Jalen Hudson sticks with Virginia Tech

St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball coach Dru Joyce II said senior Jalen Hudson is sticking with his commitment to Virginia Tech.

Hudson signed a national letter of intent with Virginia Tech in November when James Johnson was the Hokies coach. Johnson was fired in March and the Hokies hired former Marquette coach Buzz Williams.

Twinsburg native TySean Powell signs with Duquesne for basketball

Twinsburg native TySean Powell has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Duquesne men’s basketball basketball team.

Powell, a 6-foot-7 forward, was a teammate of Dukes freshman Desmond Ridenour at Cleveland Benedictine High School before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Powell averaged 16.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season at IMG.

King James Shooting Stars Classic hits Akron this weekend

The ninth annual King James Shooting Stars Classic is set for this weekend in Akron, and 13 other surrounding communities.

The event allows AAU basketball teams from around the United States and Canada to showcase their skills and be refereed by high school, college and aspiring NBA officials.

Tallmadge baseball set to host Cancer Awareness Classic at Kent State

The Tallmadge baseball team will host the 10th annual Cancer Awareness Classic at Schoonover Stadium on the Kent State University campus this weekend.

The event, which features 10 games in three days, will be held in honor of Bobbi Hindel, a longtime Tallmadge athletic secretary who passed away from cancer at age 54 on March 7.

Two Lake seniors commit to Malone swimming & diving team

Lake seniors Kaitlyn Hoch and Austin Weingart have signed with Malone University to compete for the Pioneers swimming and diving team.

Hoch earned All-Federal League as a diver for Lake and was a district qualifier during her junior and senior seasons.

Nordonia senior Alex Woicehovich commits to play football at St. Francis U

Nordonia senior Alex Woicehovich has committed to play football and major in nursing at St. Francis University in Pennsylvania.

Woicehovich helped guide the Knights to the Division II football playoffs as a junior and senior, playing a key role defensively as a linebacker. He also placed third in the Division I state wrestling tournament at 220 pounds last month.

CVCA senior Johnny Akindipe commits to play soccer at Mount Union

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior Johnny Akindipe has committed to attend the University of Mount Union and play on the men’s soccer team.

Akindipe earned four letters at CVCA under coach Jon Taylor. He helped the Royals win the Division III state title in 2010 and finish as Division II state runner-up in 2012.

Ellet senior Zack Artis commits to Lake Erie College for baseball

Ellet senior Zack Artis has made a commitment to continue his academic and baseball careers at Lake Erie College in Painesville.

Artis, a 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher, helped guide the Orangemen to City Series regular season and playoff titles as a sophomore.

Kent Roosevelt senior Mylane Bella-Smuts commits to John Carroll for volleyball

Kent Roosevelt senior Mylane Bella-Smuts has committed to John Carroll University to continue her academic and volleyball careers.

Bella-Smuts, who is 5-foot-4, is an honors student and has a 4.0 grade-point average. She plays setter and defensive specialist, and plans to major in accounting.

North Canton Hoover set to hire Todd Blackledge as boys basketball coach

Superintendent Michael Hartenstein plans to recommend Todd Blackledge as the varsity boys basketball coach for North Canton Hoover High School.

Hartenstein will present his recommendation to the Board of Education for approval at a meeting Wednesday.
