St. V-M boys basketball coach Dru Joyce II comments on starters & reserves

By Michael Beaven Published: March 19, 2014

St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball coach Dru Joyce II on his starting five as the team gets ready for a Division II state semifinal matchup with Columbus Bishop Watterson at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Ohio State University’s Value City Arena:

Jarel Woolridge, 5-foot-9, senior, guard

“He is our point guard who had a slow start to the season. He is a football player and it really took him a little while to get adjusted back to basketball. Around midseason he started to come along. Jarel is probably our most athletic player as far as the starters are concerned. He is very fast and runs track. He is shooting the ball better and is a floor leader who communicates to get guys in the right spots.”

Jalen Hudson, 6-foot-5, senior, guard-forward

“Jalen is a senior leader along with Jarel. Jalen is just a great kid who continues to get better and better. He will play next year in the ACC with Virginia Tech. Jalen shoots the ball well. He and VJ [King] are right around tied for the leading scorer on the team and Jalen and Jibri [Blount] are our best rebounders. He can shoot the ball and get it to the rim.”

Jibri Blount, 6-foot-5, junior, forward-center

“Jibri has a big body, but he is more of a wing playing in the post. We don’t really have a post player. He has accepted that challenge well. He is 6-5 and is a physical presence inside. Jibri rebounds the ball well for us and probably in some ways is our emotional leader on this team.”

Josh Williams, 6-foot-2, junior, guard

“Josh is a University of Akron recruit. Josh has come in and been a settling force for our team he does most of the ball-handing in the front court and gets us into some of our offense . . . He is a very proficient scorer and he is shooting exceptionally well from behind the 3-point line. He is shooting over 50 percent. Not too many guys do that. A great thing about him is he doesn’t take a lot of bad shots. He takes good shots.”

VJ King, 6-foot-7, sophomore, guard-forward

“VJ is 6-7. His skill-set is great. He still hasn’t come into his own as far as the player he is going to be. He has gotten stronger than he was last year and he is still growing into his adult body. He has struggled a little bit shooting the ball this year, but he has found other ways to score.”

The Fighting Irish top reserves are: 5-10 junior Johnnie Robinson, 6-5 sophomore Henry Baddley and seniors Parris Campbell Jr., Dante Booker Jr., Travonte Junius and Newman Williams. Campbell (6-2) and Booker (6-4) are Ohio State University football recruits. Junius (6-3) and Williams (6-0) are University of Akron football recruits

“We hope to play 10 or 11 [guys],” Joyce said. “[The football guys] bring a lot of toughness and add to the physical nature that we play and have to play against.”
