St. Vincent-St. Mary and North got talent; a great tribute to a legend
Here's some thoughts after covering St. Vincent-St. Marys 51-14 win over neighboring North.
*Our sincerest congratulations to the Fighting Irish on putting on a first class show honoring former football coach John Cistone. As Akron mayor Don Plusquellic said, " I'm thrilled to be here to honor a legend." Cistone needled the mayor, a former Kenmore quarterback, "Don thought we should throw the ball more."
The event included a plaque from the mayor and a proclamation declaring Friday "John Cistone Day" in the city, as well as t-shirts commemorating the day.
*Mark Murphy's 55-yard run, his third touchdown of the night, showed off his deceiving speed. He also had 90 yards and an interception.
*North has some fine talent on offense. Quarterback Kenny Johnson has good arm strength and accuracy. The Vikings big problem will be defense. The offense will score points and the Vikings game Friday at Cuyahoga Falls should give the coaching staff a better indication where the team is. Running back Del Marco Lee had a long TD run and along with Rayshawn Stevens will be headaches for other teams.
*Doran Grant is one of the big names for the Fighting Irish as a receiver and defensive back, but quarterback Oliver Hildebrandt could be the top quarterback in the area. He had five dropped passes in the first half and showed the best accuracy I've seen in the past five years, At 6-foot-5, the junior has to quickly be on every college's radar screen.
