St. Vincent-St. Mary football team playing rare game in Cincinnati
The St. Vincent-St. Mary football team will travel to play in Cincinnati Saturday for the first time since 2004 as the Irish play Cincinnati Purcell Marian at 2 p.m. at Mariemont High School.
The Irish (7-5 in 2010 and a Division III regional semifinalist) return several key players to watch including senior quarterback Kevin Besser, senior running back/defensive back SaeVon Fitzgerald, senior defensive end Matt Perry, senior wide receiver/defensive back Tyler Bischof and senior lineman Matt Olszewski.
It is the first time SVSM has played in Cincinnati since a game against Roger Bacon in 2004, according to SVSM athletic director Andy Jalwan.
Purcell Marian, a Greater Catholic League program, is led by senior E.J. Burnett, who rushed for 1,013 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Purcell Marian was 1-9 overall last season.
Saturday will be the first of a home-and-home with Purcell Marian. The two teams will play Week 1 in Akron in 2012.
Notes:
--Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach, a Cincinnati native, played high school football at Purcell and is a 1960 graduate of the school.
--SVSM coach Dan Boarman is two wins away from 150 for his career. He is 148-83 to open the season. If the Irish win Saturday, he could reach the milestone against host Walsh Jesuit on Sept. 2 (7 p.m. kickoff).
