By Michael Beaven Published: January 14, 2013

North boys basketball coach Stacie Carter and her husband Jonathan Carter welcomed into the world Jonathan Carter II at 2:59 a.m. Saturday morning.

Carter coached host North to a 68-63 victory over Ellet just hours earlier on Friday night.

“I was in labor the whole game Friday night, but I held on and didn’t let the guys know,” Carter said. “They might have known something was up because I felt different.

“We got home after the game and called the score in and went to the hospital.”

Jonathan Carter II weighed in at 9 pounds and 2 ounces and 20 inches long at Summa Akron City Hospital. Stacie said she completed phoning in the box score to the Akron Beacon Journal at 10:59 Friday night.

“I knew it was different than any of the other pains and uncomfortableness I had felt,” Carter said. “I figured they would give me fluids, make sure everything was OK and send me home. It didn’t work out like that.”

Senior Damon Bowman led the Vikings over the Orangemen with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Trarell Balknight (16 points), junior Edward Harris (14 points) and senior Marcus Robbins (eight points) were also key scorers.

Carter, a graduate of Buchtel High School and the University of Akron, was scheduled to go into the hospital Jan. 18. She has three other children: Shaia (18), Sydney (14), Joelle (3).

Assistant coaches Danyelle Love and Kevin Strickland will coach North against host Buchtel tonight and versus host Kenmore on Friday.

Carter is looking to return to the team on Jan. 22ndagainst visiting Firestone, but she is unsure if she will actively coach that game.

“I will play it by ear, Carter said. “I plan to return for the Firestone game at home. It will be hard for me to sit there and watch, but I will definitely be on the bench. The guys are excited. They have been able to come visit me.”

All City Series varsity boys basketball games are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.
