Ben Klafczynski wins HR derby at Jacobs Field

Ben Klafczynski, a 2007 Highland graduate and the Beacon Journal Baseball Player of the Year, recently won the second annual SportsTime Ohio High School Home Run derby that took place at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

Klafczynski, a Kent State recruit, defeated Ron Stout of Medina in the final round. Ray Klafczynski provided the pitching for his son, whom beat a field of 10 players.

Copley graduate has good showing in Cleveland

Mike Baum, a 2002 graduate of Copley High School, competed in two F2000 races as part of the weekend's events surrounding Champ Car's Grand Prix of Cleveland at Burke Lakefront Airport.

On Sunday, Baum, a rookie in F2000 who has only been racing cars for two years, finished 11th in a field of more than 30 drivers. The 23-year-old Baum also finished 16th in a race the day before.

Copley graduate hits race track close to home

Mike, a 2002 graduate of Copley High School, is a rookie driver in the F2000 Championship Series, which will hold races Saturday and Sunday at Burke Lakefront Airport as part of the festivities for Champ Car's 2007 Grand Prix of Cleveland.

Walsh Jesuit baseball player commits to Marietta

Recent Walsh Jesuit graduate Chris Dowdell has made a commitment to continue his baseball and academic career at Marietta College, according to Warriors coach Chris Kaczmar.

Dowdell played first base and second base for the Warriors. He batted .438 with two home runs, eight doubles and 18 RBI this past season. He also had an on-base percentage of .532.

Lester makes World Team

Harry Lester, a former wrestling star at CVCA, made the U.S. World Team for the third consecutive year.

Lester, who won four high school state championships from 1998 to 2001, won a Greco-Roman title at 145.5 pounds on June 10 at the U.S. World Team Trials in Las Vegas.

Ben Klafczynski earns All-American status

Highland senior center fielder Ben Klafczynski was named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger All-American team.

Klafczynski, a Kent State recruit, hit .613 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI to lead the Hornets (23-9, 11-3 in the Suburban League) to their first appearance in a regional championship game. He also recorded 18 steals in 19 attempts and scored 43 runs. As a pitcher, Klafczynski went 3-2 with a 1.97 ERA and three saves. He also struck out 23 batters in 22 innings of work.

Kansas City Royals draft Green grad

Mercyhurst College junior and Green High School graduate David Lough was selected in the 2007 Major League First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round (336th overall pick).

Lough, a center fielder, became the highest player drafted in Mercyhurst’s history. In 2007, Lough led the team in 12 offensive categories: batting average (.404), slugging percentage (.789), on base percentage (.477), runs (52), hits (74), RBI (49), doubles (16), triples (6), home runs (8), extra base hits (34), total bases (126), stolen bases (23).

Aurora senior headed to University of Cincinnati

Aurora senior catcher Collin Sanford has committed to continue his academic and baseball career at the University of Cincinnati.

Sanford his .431 with nine RBI to help the Greenmen reach a Division II district final.

Minnesota Twins select Copley grad

Kent State junior Dominique Rodgers, a 2004 graduate of Copley High School, was selected Friday by the Minnesota Twins in the 36th round with the 1,105th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Rodgers, a right-hander, was a key component of the KSU bullpen for the past two seasons. In his final 14 appearances of the season, Rodgers went 4-2 with one save and an ERA of 2.48 in 36 1/3 innings of work. He had an overall record of 4-5 with a 4.11 ERA in 2007.

Torrence drafted by Astros

Canton South senior center fielder Devon Torrence was selected Friday in the Major League Baseball First-Year Play Draft by the Houston Astros in the 16th round with the 501st overall pick.

Torrence is also an Ohio State football recruit. Torrence said the contract the Astros offer him will help him decide if he will pursue professional baseball or college football. If Torrence does choose to play for the Buckeyes, he will likely play cornerback.

5 McKinley baseball players make college choices

Canton McKinley baseball coach Joe Pukansky confirmed that five Bulldogs players will continue their careers in college.

Senior shortstop Zack Leonard has signed with Eastern Michigan University for a full-ride scholarship for academics and athletics. Leonard earned the Federal League Player of the Year award after batting .450 this season.

Wadsworth pitcher selects Baldwin-Wallace

Wadsworth senior pitcher Nick Flanigan will attend Baldwin-Wallace College next fall to continue his baseball career according to Wadsworth coach Brian Madigan.

Flanigan compiled a 5-3 record this season with a 1.68 ERA. He pitched 41.2 innings and struck out 33 batters.

Bigach commits to Carson-Newman College

Walsh Jesuit senior pitcher Matthew Bigach has committed to continue his academic and baseball career at Division II Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Bigach went 4-0 in 2007, with an ERA of 1.85 and 17 strikeouts.

The Hudson softball team won it's first state championship Saturday, defeating Elyria 4-0 in the Division I state championship game at Brookside Park in Ashland.

Dalton Player of the Game

The Dalton softball team won it's second consecutive Division IV state championship Saturday by defeating North Lewisburg Traid 3-1.

It was the second season in the row the Bulldogs (27-4) beat the Cardinals (23-8) in the title game at Brookside Park in Ashland.
