The Tallmadge baseball team will host the 10th annual Cancer Awareness Classic at Schoonover Stadium on the Kent State University campus this weekend.
The event, which features 10 games in three days, will be held in honor of Bobbi Hindel, a longtime Tallmadge athletic secretary who passed away from cancer at age 54 on March 7.
“Tallmadge and Hudson High Schools started this event 10 years ago to raise money to donate toward the continuous fight against cancer,” Tallmadge coach Kenny Linn said. “Every one of us has someone or knows someone that has battled or is battling this awful disease. Just last month, Tallmadge lost one of its most amazing and beautiful Blue Devils, Bobbi Hindel.”
Linn said Hindel’s husband, Jim Hindel, is a coach on his staff and will be attendance along with their children, Lindsey Hindel and Cory Hindel.
“Our first pitch on Friday night will be thrown out by Lindsey Hindel and received by her big brother Cory, who is an ex-catcher for Tallmadge and Kent State,” Linn said. “On Saturday night our honorary recipient of this year’s weekend will be Codey Montecalvo. Codey is a seventh-grader at Miller South Middle School in Akron and is a classmate of my daughter, Presley. Codey has been battling cancer as well. Codey will be throwing out our first pitch on Saturday night’s game.”
Last year’s recipient at the event was Alex Loftin, who is battling cancer. Loftin played baseball at Stow High School and at University of Akron.
