Walsh sophomore Aaron Sandberg defeated Dugan Delp of Toledo Central Catholic 6-1, 6-4 and Cloverleaf sophomore Jacob Dunbar took down Marc Sodini of Wilmington 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Dunbar said the first round of a tournament can sometimes be the hardest, and that he's not thinking about last year's four place finish.
"Sometimes the first round is the hardest to get into the facility and get used to the surroundings and everything," Dunbar said. "States is a bigger tournament than I've had in a while so it takes a little bit to get used to. The rust is off.
It's a different tournament. There were 13 seniors in the draw [last year] and they're all gone now. You can't expect too much. You don't know what's going to happen."
Dunbar will face Jeffrey Schorsh from Perrysburg in the quarterfinals later today. Sandberg is currently playing Upper Arlington junior Stuart Little.
Hudson junior Steven Boslet lost 7-6, 6-4, 7-2 to Lakota East's Zach Mueck. Boslet had trouble handling Mueck's serve.
"His serve was working pretty well," Boslet said. "Even if I did get the return in, it'd usually put him in an offensive spot and that made it hard to break."
