Walsh Jesuit 4, Mentor Lake Catholic 3 -- Senior Mitch Hines scored the game-winning goal with 1:57 to go in overtime Monday to lead the host Warriors to a victory at the Kent State University Ice Arena.
The win allows Walsh (15-12-4, 7-1-2) to share the inaugural Great Lakes Hockey League regular season title with University School (22-4-6, 7-1-2).
Walsh senior Chris Gaul assisted on Hines’ goal
“That was an awesome game,” Walsh coach Pat McKendry said. “It really is the will of these seniors. You could see it. The seniors found a way to win this game. The final three goals involved seniors.”
Walsh overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to triumph on Senior Night. Senior Joel Ruane scored a goal for Walsh with 7:36 left off an assist from senior Jack Huscroft, and then senior Colin Lippincott delivered the game-tying goal with 40 seconds to go. Senior Todd Lambert and Huscroft assisted on Lippincott’s goal.
Junior Kevin Van Bokkelen netted Walsh's first goal with 5:28 remaining in the first period. Gaul and sophomore Matt Mueller were each credited with an assist.
Warriors senior goalie Jamie Studer made 23 saves.
Walsh and University are sharing the league crown because they have identical league records and tied 2-2 in their only meeting.
McKendry said due to a tiebreaker, University has the No. 1 seed in the GLHL Tournament, which is dubbed the Cleveland Cup. Walsh is seeded No. 2.
Walsh will play Lakewood St. Edward in the opening round at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Strongsville OBM Arena. University and Parma Padua Franciscan will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday prior to Walsh’s game.
Thursday will feature other opening round action between No. 3 seed Cleveland St. Ignatius and No. 6 seed Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, and No. 4 seed Lake Catholic and No. 5 seed Parma Heights Holy Name.
McKendry said the Cleveland Cup semifinals are set for Saturday and the final is set for Sunday. Times and locations will be determined.
The OSHAA tournament starts on Feb. 10 and will include other local schools, such as Hudson and Kent Roosevelt.
