Walsh Jesuit's Rardin on Victory Over Mentor Lake Catholic

By gthomas Published: September 26, 2011

Last Saturday the Walsh Jesuit left Mentor with plenty to smile about.
The Warriors beat the Lake Catholic Cougars 14-12 behind defense, an aspect of the team’s game that had been missing in previous efforts – consistent defense.
“The defense finally played four solid quarters,” coach Gerry Rardin said via phone Monday afternoon.
The win impresses and has a huge impact on its ranking with respect to computer points.  So far this year, the Cougars beat Ursuline and Youngstown Moody, two highly regarded teams.
“They were 4-0 and beat some very good teams,” Rardin said.  “We knew we were going to have to play a complete game.”
Rardin said that he knew that his team had to have a consistent passing game because Ursuline and Moody were unable to run on the Cougars. He got it from quarterback Nick Wargo, who tossed for 193 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-26 passing.  Wargo still has not thrown a pick this year.
In the process, Wargo got his outside receivers involved, connecting with them for 13 of his passes.  Crissean Caver caught seven passes and Doug Lewis six.
“It was good to get the ball to those guys,” Rardin said.
