• St. Thomas Aquinas junior tight end Joel Rich has reportedly been offered by Buffalo, according to ScoutingOhio.com. It is the first offer for Rich, who is 6 feet 4 and 230 pounds.

• Kenmore junior outside linebacker Deontae Moore has reportedly added an offer from Toledo, according to ScoutingOhio.com. Moore, who is 6-4 and 205 pounds, also has offers from Akron and Kent State.

Copley's Lou Gigliotti to walk on at Toledo

Copley senior quarterback Lou Gigliotti has decided to attend the University of Toledo as a preferred walk-on for coach Matt Campbell.

Gigliotti, 6-foot and 175 pounds, leaves Copley as the all-time leading passer in school history with over 5,000 passing yards and 39 passing touchdowns.

East names Marques Hayes football coach

Marques Hayes has been named the East football coach, Dragons Athletic Director Ron Linger said.

Hayes, 30, was an assistant under previous East coach Damon Beasley the past two seasons serving as the defensive line coach in 2010 and the defensive coordinator in 2011.

New football divisions would affect half of our local high schools

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has added a seventh division for football for 2013. The Beacon Journal’s area schools are listed by 2012 divisions with number of boys enrolled in 2012 and new division classification (based on current enrollment and could change before 2013 season) in parenthesis. With the projected numbers, 38 of our five-county schools would move divisions.

The projected new enrollment breakdowns based on number of boys in the high school are as follows:
Division I: 600 to 1,164
Division II: 410 to 599
Division III: 288 to 409
Division IV: 216 to 287
Division V: 159 to 215
Division VI: 114 to 158
Division VII: 30 to 113

State adds seventh division to high school football for 2013

The OHSAA has decided to add a seventh division in football starting in 2013. The top division will have the top 10 percent of schools according to enrollment. The next six divisions will be divided evenly.

Medina's Flake signs with OSU for lacrosse

Medina senior Daniel Flake signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to continue his academic and lacrosse careers at Ohio State University.

Flake is a three-year varsity starter as a defensemen for the Bees.

Hudson's Mummey set to play basketball at CWRU

Hudson senior Laura Mummey has committed to continue her academic and basketball careers at Case Western Reserve University, Explorers coach Dennis Lawler said.

Mummey was named Special Mention All-Ohio as a senior and was also selected to the Academic All-Ohio team.

Hudson senior Christie Wade has committed to continue her academic career and play basketball and softball at John Carroll University .

Wade is a starter and key player for both Explorers teams. She has a 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

Black steps down as Roosevelt boys basketball coach

Cameron Black said he has decided to step down as Kent Roosevelt boys basketball coach to spend more time with his family.

“After 26 years of coaching, I have decided to step down,” Black said. “The No. 1 reason is my wife and I’s two children will be playing Division I college sports. My oldest son Cameron II is playing basketball at Bowling Green and my youngest son Curtis will be playing football at Akron. With the two boys competing in the fall and winter, I felt it was time to move on, watch them play and spend more time with my wife (Casondra).”

Kent Roosevelt seeks basketball coach with Black out

Roosevelt athletic director Ernie Rutzky informed the Akron Beacon Journal that the school is currently accepting applications for the open position, which was previously held by Cameron Black.

Kempt, who is 6-feet-5 and 200 pounds, also had offers from Toledo, Tennessee, West Virginia, Bowling Green, Indiana, Kent State and Mississippi.
