Winner gets Shillelagh Trophy
Archbishop Hoban and St. Vincent-St. Mary will renew acquaintances on the football field at 7 tonight at InfoCision Stadium on the campus of the University of Akron.
Per usual, the winner gets the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ Shillelagh Trophy.
The Fighting Irish have won the past five games since 2007, after the Knights put together nine consecutive victories in the rivalry game from 1998-2006.
Hoban first played St. Vincent in 1959 and the two schools met annually until 1971, with St. V holding a 7-6 advantage in wins. Hoban played St. Mary in 1958 and 1959 and won both games.
St. Vincent and St. Mary merged in 1972, and continued to play Hoban in football until 1977. St. V-M won five of the six meetings.
The schools then did not play football again until 1996, when Hoban won. St. V-M won in 1997.
St. Vincent and St. Mary played annually from 1948 to 1958 with St. Vincent posting a 9-0-2 record.
