Financial institutions merge over summer; signage to be replaced

Huntington Bancshares Inc. announced Tuesday that former Sky Bank accounts were converted to Huntington services over the weekend.
New signage at the former SkyBank locations will be in place on Oct. 7.
Huntington is a $55 billion regional bank holding company headquartered in Columbus, The bulk of its area presence is in Canton, which is the headquarters for what is called the Greater Akron Canton Region.
Huntington and Sky merged in July, resulting in 45 banking offices and 95 ATM locations in eight counties, including Summit, Stark, Medina and Portage.
Rick Hull, Huntington's Greater Akron Canton president, said the merger led to the closing of 10 institutions based on market overlap that took into consideration distance to a nearby office, space and operating expenses. He said a minimal number of jobs were lost because of attrition and the high turnover of tellers. Huntington employs 650 people in the local region.
There are now nine banks in Summit County, 22 in Stark, three in Medina, eight in Portage and one in Wayne.
''This was a good mix, we complemented each other well and had similar philosophies,'' said James Nicholson, chief operating officer. ''We added depth to our leadership team and increased our presence more.''
Hull said Huntington combines local operations with national resources. ''Each of the 13 regions operates on its own with direction from national,'' he said. ''We are given a slate of products, and on the local level we decide which of those products to sell that will fit the needs of our market,'' he said. ''They have a hands-off approach, allowing us to make local decisions.''
Huntington officials noted that the bank won five excellence awards for business banking customer satisfaction and various product capabilities based on a 2007 Greenwich Associates' Business Banking Study. Huntington was named a national award winner in four categories: overall customer satisfaction, branch services, cash management services and online services.
Huntington is the 24th largest bank in the United States based on assets. It has 344 offices in Ohio; nationwide, it has 610 in six states, plus 1,400 ATMs.
