GM adapts USW's health care trust
Published on Friday, Sep 28, 2007
Beacon Journal staff report
The proposed Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association agreement between General Motors and the United Auto Workers follows a similar arrangement negotiated between Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and the United Steelworkers.
Goodyear and the USW agreed to establish a VEBA for union retirees as part of a contract settlement in late December after an 86-day strike.
''As a longtime supplier to GM, we are pleased that the company and the union were able to settle the strike so quickly,'' Goodyear spokesman Keith Price said in a prepared statement after the announcement of a tentative contract agreement.
''In addition, we take pride in the fact that a health care trust apparently modeled on Goodyear's VEBA agreement with our union played such a central role in the settlement. GM was one of several companies that inquired about the details regarding our VEBA agreement, and Goodyear's leadership has shared information with those companies as appropriate.''
The Goodyear-Steelworkers VEBA awaits federal court approval.
The GM strike had no impact on Goodyear, and its plants continued normal operations, Price said.
