Beacon Journal hires director of marketing

Sabo brings 22 years of experience to job

By Betty Lin-Fisher
Beacon Journal business writer

The new marketing and community relations director for the Akron Beacon Journal grew up reading the newspaper and has 22 years' experience in the industry in other parts of the country that she can bring to her new position.

That combination makes Christine Sabo the perfect person to take on the job, said Alton Brown, the Beacon Journal's executive vice president and general manager.

''We were just really fortunate to find someone with
those resources and experience located right here,'' Brown said. ''She loves this area. It was a perfect fit. She wanted to be here in a role to match her talents.''

Sabo replaces Rita Kelly Madick, who left the Beacon Journal in November.

Sabo was raised in Norton and graduated from Norton High School and the University of Akron.

After college, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a reporter for a few years at a weekly newspaper, then spent most of her career there in marketing communications with the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), a newspaper industry group.

At the NAA, Sabo worked in marketing newspapers and helping the industry increase ad revenue and circulation. As part of her job, she has worked with newspapers across the country.

Sabo moved back to the Akron area 10 years ago but continued to work for the NAA, eventually on a contract basis through her business, Partners Institute Inc.

The 43-year-old said she moved back to Akron because it was home, her family was here and because of ''the exceptional community we have here.''

''I have great pride in my hometown, and I am eager to market and promote the information and current events that are meaningful to my community,'' said Sabo, who occasionally helped her brothers with their Beacon Journal paper route when she was young. ''Through my travels around the country, I was always very proud to boast about the Akron Beacon Journal. It has a storied history of exceptional service as a community watchdog and as a central clearinghouse for events. Ohio.com (the Beacon Journal's Web site) is an exciting interactive tool for readers and advertisers.''

Sabo, who will oversee a staff of four, will be the Beacon Journal liaison with community groups, Brown said. However, she will not be the only face of the paper, he said, because senior managers have been taking a more active role in the community.

Among Sabo's initial charges, Brown said, will be focusing on marketing the Beacon Journal and ''the incredible talent that we have.''

Publisher Andrea Mathewson said: ''There's a lot of great things going on at the Beacon Journal, and I don't think that we tell that story as well as we should. I think Chris is the person who can do that for us.''

Sabo lives in Bath Township with her husband, Edward Sunkin, also an Akron native. They are finalizing the adoption of their 1-year-old son, Joseph.
