Survey seeks starting wage data

Economic group tries to recruit businesses to region by giving true picture of costs

By Paula Schleis
Beacon Journal business writer

What are the starting pay and benefits of 250 professions in Northeast Ohio?

Team NEO and Kent State University's Stark Campus are teaming up for their second annual survey covering a 16-county region.

Team NEO uses the compensation data in its effort to recruit businesses to Ohio. Without the local survey, economic development groups have to turn to state data, which only includes median and average wages.

Those figures can skew high in Northeast Ohio, where there is a history of veteran workers and high job retention.

To combat what companies might see as work force ''sticker shock,'' Team NEO sought to find true starting wages — the kinds of salary that new companies are more likely to pay a new work force.

Team NEO has found that most businesses considering expansion to this region ask about labor costs at their first meeting.

''There is a direct necessity for starting wage and benefits information for recruiting work force and business in Northeast Ohio,'' said Team NEO's research head, James Robey. ''The data collected from this survey will allow us to provide timely and accurate information that helps us showcase Northeast Ohio's viable business environment.''

Local chambers of commerce and county-based economic development groups have helped Team NEO identify businesses to survey based on professional and skilled labor occupations that are most in demand.

The survey is being mailed this week. Recipients are asked to complete and return the survey by Feb. 11.

Responses are kept confidential; only aggregate information is shared. The report should be completed by May 31 and will be shared with participating organizations.

The survey is being paid in part with Federal Workforce Investment Act funds via the U.S. Department of Labor.
