New study examines future of companies
Published on Friday, Jan 18, 2008
Beacon Journal staff report
Northeast Ohio is a leader in nanotech innovation and should collaborate with other regions in the state to make Ohio a nanotechnology leader, according to a report published this week by NorTech and Nano-Network.
The Northeast Ohio Nanotechnology Report is the result of a strategic planning exercise conducted by the NanoBusiness Alliance and funded by the Generation Foundation.
The study examined the nanotechnology landscape in Northeast Ohio, peer regions, Ohio and neighboring states. Factors considered were research funding and publications, academic patents, the concentration of small- to mid-size nanotechnology companies, the nanotech-related activity of large technology corporations, venture capital investment and work force.
Ohio was shown to have a rich concentration of growing nanotech companies; an impressive research publication record; a significant concentration of companies hungry for new technology; a nexus of world-class polymer materials companies; a strong presence in the health-care sector, and a growing venture capital community.
But there is a challenge Northeast Ohio and the state face: the lack of a collective statewide nanotech strategy that the report said could better connect its regions and sectors.
The study concluded that a priority of the Nano-Network, Northeast Ohio and Ohio should be a statewide nanotechnology initiative.
