Akron shop owners come up with idea to organize Metaphysical Yard Sale

What's less visible are the business and spiritual principles that motivated four shop owners into organizing the affair.
Lisa Brusso, owner of Peace, Love & Light, said that when she started her business in 2004, she filled it with inventory purchased from other businesses that had closed.
In some cases, bitter competition was their undoing.
''I wanted to know what their mistakes were so I wouldn't make them,'' Brusso said.
Now Brusso and her peers Lisa Leonti of Any Witch Way (210 E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave. in North Hill) and Linda and Henry Knapp of Mystical Creations (2121 E. Market St. in the Ellet area of Akron) are united under the philosophy of ''abundance.''
''That basically says there is abundance for everybody, so if we work together . . . we all stay in business and prosper,'' Brusso said.
More than a dozen other businesses will join the foursome in a daylong clearance
sale outside Peace, Love & Light at 841 N. Main St. The shop is the former Acorn Grows bookstore.
While the business owners might be guided by spiritual principles, the event also makes business sense, Brusso said.
For one, the event should make a visual splash, luring in curious motorists.
Also, people who might be too intimidated to walk into a metaphysical store might be less uncomfortable with this event.
''To actually walk into the store sometimes is a little threatening, but people feel safer strolling around and exploring things in a venue like this,'' Brusso said.
In addition to the joint yard sale, the owners are finding other ways to help each other.
For instance, in the past two years, they have combined their purchasing needs to meet minimum requirements from wholesalers, Leonti said.
''Even in this tough economy,'' Brusso said, ''we're all managing to pull together.''
