The number of Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings is up 21.6 percent this year in the greater Akron area compared with the same period in 2007, according to the latest available information from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, based in Akron.
The number of Chapter 13 filings dropped slightly this year compared with the first seven months of 2007.
Through the end of July, there were 2,121 Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings in Akron, while there were 718 Chapter 13 filings. For the first seven months of 2007, there were 1,744 Chapter 7 filings and 722 Chapter 13 filings. For all of 2007, there were 2,953 Chapter 7 filings and 1,240 Chapter 13 filings in Akron, according to the court's Web site.
