Summit County's unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent in July, up from 6.2 percent in June, according to Ohio labor figures released Tuesday.
Akron's unemployment rate rose to 7.4 percent in July, above the state seasonally adjusted average of 7.2 percent. The city's unemployment rate was 6.8 percent in June and was 5.9 percent in July 2007.
Neighboring Cuyahoga Falls had an unemployment rate of 6.1 percent in July, up from 5.7 percent in June and 4.7 percent in July 2007.
The rise in the county and cities' unemployment rates, which were not adjusted for seasonal factors, mirrors the rise in the overall state rate for July.
There were 20,200 unemployed people in Summit County in July out of an overall labor
force of 301,300. Akron had 8,100 unemployed people out of a work force of 109,900, while Cuyahoga Falls had 1,800 unemployed out of 29,400 people.
Unemployment rates increased in 80 of the state's 88 counties.
The Stark County unemployment rate was 7.3 percent in July, up from 6.7 percent in June and 5.7 percent a year ago.
Medina County's unemployment rate dropped to 6.2 percent in July from 6.8 percent in June. The county had a 5.3 percent unemployment rate in July 2007.
Portage County had a 6.8 percent unemployment rate in July, up from 6.3 percent in June and 5.2 percent in July a year ago.
Wayne County's unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent from 5.6 percent in June. The comparable rate a year ago was 4.8 percent.
Cuyahoga County's unemployment rate dropped to 7.4 percent in July from 8.1 percent in June. In July 2007, the county unemployment rate was 6.4 percent.
Cleveland had an unemployment rate of 9.3 percent last month, down from 10.1 percent in June, but up from 8 percent in July 2007.
Meigs County in Southeast Ohio had the state's highest county unemployment rate at 11 percent in July.
Holmes County, meanwhile, had the lowest unemployment rate at 5.1 percent.
Last week, the state reported Ohio had its highest one-month unemployment rate this century, losing more than 11,000 jobs from June to July.
The 7.2 percent unemployment rate for July was the highest in Ohio since a 7 percent rate in January 1993. The highest one-month rate since 1970 was 13.8 percent in January 1983.
Ohio reported it had a 6.6 percent unemployment rate in June, while in July 2007 the rate was 5.6 percent.
