DO IT YOURSELF
There are many recipes that can be found on the Internet for ''homemade laundry soap.'' Here's the recipe that Jennifer Walker uses that she picked up on a home-schooling forum.
HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP
Ingredients:
Tap water
1/4 cup Fels soap,
grated (Ivory bar
soap can also
be used)
1/4 cup borax
1/4 cup soda ash,
also called
washing soda
Supplies:
1 gallon
milk/water container with
a screw top
Measuring cup (4-cup size works easiest)
Funnel
Stirring spoon (if using wooden spoon, do not use for cooking food)
Stove pot (6 cups or larger)
Using the funnel, put 4 cups hot tap water into milk container. Set aside.
Measure 4 cups water into pan. Add Fels soap; heat and stir until soap is dissolved. Remove from heat and add borax and soda ash, stirring well. Transfer liquid to measuring cup.
Using funnel, pour soap liquid into container. Tighten screw top onto container and give a shake.
Add 8 more cups of water to container. Tighten top and give a shake to mix. Note: you can use the soap at this point even though it has not cooled and thickened.
Loosen top while cooling. When cool, it resembles egg drop soup. After cooling, tighten top and store.
To use: If liquid has settled, give it a shake before pouring. Add 1/2 cup liquid soap to machine as washer water fills. Recipe yields 32 loads.
