In today's Akron Beacon Journal Business section, read the first of a series of reports about five area families who are undergoing a money makeover.
The Reclaim the Dream series profiles Laurel Kunkel of Canton, who faces tough financial decisions ahead.
The Beacon Journal's two series, one focusing on personal finance and the other, The American Dream: Hanging by a Thread, focusing on the economic strains on the middle class, will continue with several upcoming events, including:
• A reader question-and-answer call-in program staffed by counselors with the Consumer Credit Counseling Service and members of the Financial Planning Association of Northeast Ohio.
They will answer questions from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25.
• A public forum Oct. 14, sponsored by the newspaper, WKSU-FM, PBS Channels 45 and 49 and the University of Akron, at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall to discuss solutions to the middle class's economic woes.
• A free financial fair Oct. 18, sponsored by the newspaper, the city of Akron, Summit County and the John S. Knight Center.
Meanwhile, Akron has been chosen as the first city in the nation to become a ''Savings Community'' in an initiative by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and America Saves, a nonprofit group that encourages consumer savings.
Since the Reclaim the Dream campaign was launched 10 weeks ago, Beacon Journal readers have pledged to save or reduce their debt by nearly $450,000 — the majority in the next six months to two years. Readers have pledged to store away more than $231,000 in savings and reduce their debt by $218,000. To pledge, go online to http://www.ohio.com/pledge.
