On Michael and MaryBeth Andrews' problem being ''cash-poor'' and relying on credit for a temporary loan and paying it off within the month:
''If they make the changes suggested, they may be able to have an extra cushion to try to get ahead.''
On the high cost of gasoline from their budget:
''He'll have to find that elsewhere in his budget,'' Davis said, since there's not much Michael can do about his 55-mile round-trip commute to work. ''Maybe he can track to see if he's only traveling to and from work or if he's using the gas for other things.''
On MaryBeth getting a part-time job to use for entertainment or expenses, if needed, but not wanting to add that income to the budget:
''They're not really having hard times. Once she gets the part-time job, she might realize they not only need it for entertainment, but extra for the budget.''
On possibly using some of their savings to pay down their $10,000 in credit-card debt:
''They should pay down their debt with their savings to maybe get ahead (instead of paying finance charges), especially for gasoline.''
In general:
''They're on the right path. They've already got their IRAs and 401(k)s in place for retirement. A lot of people don't do that.''
