Akron Urban League job fair draws big crowd

Hundreds turn out for event; organizer expects attendance to exceed last year's

By Paula Schleis
Beacon Journal business writer

Hundreds of unemployed Akron-area residents are taking their job search to the Akron Urban League today for the organization's annual Northeast Ohio Diversity Job Fair.

Seventy vendors are on hand to recruit workers for open positions, collect resumes and spread the word about ongoing job opportunities.

The job fair continues until 4 p.m. today at 440 Vernon Odom Blvd. in Akron.

Event organizer Yolanda Clay said she expects the event to top last year's attendance of 1,667.

''We're looking for a lot more this year with the economy the way it is,'' Clay said. The Akron Urban League has already seen a bump in its employment assistance programs, ''so we've already seen so many people come through our doors needing help prior to today.''

Megon Whatley of Akron was on hand this morning passing out resumes to potential future employers. The 28-year-old was laid off in August when the nonprofit she worked for lost funding for her marketing position.

Concerned that there may not be too many marketing positions in the Northeast Ohio economy at the moment, Whatley said she expanded her career search to administrative assistant positions and had found some promising leads at the fair.

Whatley said this was her second Akron Urban League job fair, and she had a few callbacks after the first one, ''so it's a good event.''

A company new to the event this year is Swensons Drive-In Restaurants, where Vice President Dave Lillich said he was searching for ''some hard-working managers.''

''We've met quite a few people. I think its a pretty good turnout so far,'' Lillich said.
