Car and light truck sales in Northeast Ohio dropped by more than 20 percent in August from a year ago, according to figures released Wednesday.
August car sales fell 21.6 percent, while truck sales were down 26.1 percent from August 2007, the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers' Association reported.
Car sales since Jan. 1 are down 5.9 percent, while truck sales are down 12.8 percent, according to the association. The group represents dealers in a 21-county area, including Summit. Sales figures are based on vehicle registration figures from the state.
New vehicle sales are near the bottom of the industry downturn, the association said in a news release, as gasoline prices fall and the economy shows signs of improving.
According to the association:
• Chevrolet sales fell 40.1 percent to 2,276 vehicles in August, compared to 3,799 a year ago. Sales are down 7 percent since Jan. 1 to 24,378 vehicles, compared to 26,213 vehicles for the same period in 2007.
• Ford sales fell 28.7 percent to 2,109 vehicles, compared to 2,985 a year ago. Sales are down 16.9 percent since Jan. 1 to 18,769 compared to 22,596 for the first eight months of 2007.
• Chrysler sales in August dropped 44.6 percent to 449, compared to 811 a year ago. Sales are down 32.7 percent for the first eight months of this year to 4,278, compared to 6,356 for the same period in 2007.
• Dodge sales fell 23.4 percent in August to 669 vehicles, compared to 873 a year ago. Sales are down 23.5 percent for the first eight months of this year to 5,876. Sales were 7,676 for the first eight months of 2007.
• Jeep sales dropped 30.8 percent to 498 vehicles, compared to 720 in August 2007. Since Jan. 1, sales are down 11.4 percent to 4,778 vehicles, compared to 5,394 for the first eight months of 2007.
Honda and Toyota sales also dropped in August compared to a year ago.
Honda sales are down 2 percent since Jan. 1 to 14,050 vehicles, compared to 14,336 vehicles for the first eight months of 2007.
Toyota sales are up 3.3 percent since Jan. 1 to 16,232 vehicles, compared to 15,719 vehicles for the same period in 2007.
Eleven vehicle brands have shown sales increases since Jan. 1, including Jaguar, Nissan, Subaru and Volkswagen, according to the association's report.
