Lawmakers support
airport flight to D.C.
A letter signed by both Ohio senators and four Akron-area members of Congress in support of a new US Airways nonstop to Washington, D.C., from Akron-Canton Airport has been sent to the Department of Transportation.
In the letter, Sens. Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich and U.S. Reps. Steven LaTourette, Ralph Regula, Tim Ryan and Betty Sutton said opening the government-controlled slot at Ronald Reagan National Airport would ''provide direct service to D.C. for 1.3 million of our constituents for the first time.''
The Akron-Canton area ''is poised to continue to grow, but requires air service to major metropolitan areas to provide its leaders and residents easier access to government, new markets, research institutions and cultural amenities,'' the letter said.
In an interview, Regula said, ''There's a demonstrated need this is a market that will utilize that particular flight very actively.''
A decision is expected in mid- to late-November.
Economic activity
down, report says
Economic activity weakened in Ohio and elsewhere in the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's district since mid-August, according to anecdotal reports in the Fed's newest Beige Book released Wednesday.
The Cleveland Fed said in the past six weeks, factory output and steel shipments softened and that residential construction remains very slow, with no improvement expected through 2009. Retailers said sales were characterized as flat to declining, while new car purchases declined sharply.
The commercial credit market tightened, and consumer lending was flat. Energy production was steady to increasing. The market for freight transport services declined.
There was a slight drop in employment levels. Staffing firms saw a small increase in job openings, primarily in health care and professional business services.
The Cleveland Fed's district includes all of Ohio and parts of Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
